Guanajay
Guanajay is a town and municipality in Artemisa Province in western Cuba, located about southwest of Havana. The town lies among hills. Guanajay is the twin town of Axtla de Terrazas, Axtla De Terrazas Overview In colonial times it was an acclimatization station for newly arrived troops from Spain, and subsequently became well known as a health resort. Founded in 1650, it was part of the province of Pinar del Río Province, Pinar del Río until 1976. It was then included in La Habana Province until that was divided in two in 2011. The country surrounding Guanajay is a fertile sugarcane and tobacco region, and historically it has been an important distribution point in the commerce of the western end of the island. Artemisa Province
Artemisa Province is one of the two new provinces created from the former La Habana Province, whose creation was approved by the Cuban National Assembly on August 1, 2010, the other being Mayabeque Province. The new provinces came into existence on January 1, 2011. Overview Artemisa was the largest city and municipality of the former La Habana Province. The newly formed province combined the eight western municipalities of La Habana Province and three eastern municipalities of neighbor province Pinar del Río (Bahía Honda, Candelaria and San Cristóbal). The capital and largest city is Artemisa (47,000 pop. in 2015). The new province is only larger than Havana city and Mayabeque, but with more population than four other Cuban provinces. Artemisa () is a municipality and city in Cuba, formerly part of La Habana Province. According to a law approved by the Cuban National Assembly in August 2010, Artemisa became the capital city of the newly formed Artemisa Province, which comprises eight municipalities of the former La Habana Province and three from Pinar del Río. It has an area of 642.0 square kilometers and a population of over 85,000 inhabitants (2017). Due to its coffee crops in the past and the bucolic local landscape, it has received the nickname "Jardín de Cuba" (Garden of Cuba) and is also known as the "Villa Roja" (Red Village) due to the color of its soils. Caimito is a municipality and town in Artemisa Province of Cuba. The town was founded in 1820. The municipality of ''Caimito del Guayabal'' was created in 1910, based on the previously existing (1879–1902) municipality of Guayabal in the Pinar del Río Province. Since 1976, the official name is Caimito. Mariel is a municipality and town in the Artemisa Province of Cuba. It is located approximately west of the city of Havana. Geography The town is situated on the south-east side of the Mariel Bay. The villages of La Boca, Henequen, Mojica, Quiebra Hacha, and Cabañas are the major settlements composing the municipality of Mariel. History Agustín Parlá Orduña, born in Key West on October 11, 1887, of Cuban parents exiled during the struggle for Cuban's independence, was the first man to fly over the sea from Key West, Florida to El Mariel, Cuba, on May 19, 1913. The port of Mariel is the nearest port to the United States. In 1980, some 125,000 Cubans left Mariel and went to the United States in what is known as the Mariel boatlift. In the Southwestern United States, Pueblo (capitalized) refers to the Native tribes of Puebloans having fixed-location communities with permanent buildings which also are called pueblos (lowercased). The Spanish explorers of northern New Spain used the term ''pueblo'' to refer to permanent indigenous towns they found in the region, mainly in New Mexico and parts of Arizona, in the former province of Nuevo México.
