Bavarian A I
Bavarian A I engines were German steam locomotives in service with the Royal Bavarian State Railways (''Königlich Bayerische Staatsbahn'') from 1841 to 1871. Three manufacturers were awarded a contract to build eight locomotives each, with the stipulation that the components of the different machines had to be interchangeable with one another. The engines achieved a speed of 33 km/h on a line with an incline of 1:200. The first engine was retired in 1871 and scrapped. Five other examples were rebuilt into B 1 locomotives and four were sold. The last one was scrapped in 1874. They were coupled with 2 T 3,35 tenders. Emil Kessler
Emil Julius Carl Kessler (20 August 1813 - 16 March 1867) was a German businessman and founder of the Maschinenfabrik Esslingen ('Esslingen Engineering Works'). Biography Kessler was born in Baden-Baden, attended school there and later studied constructional and mechanical engineering in Karlsruhe. In 1837 he founded an engineering works with Theodor Martiensen in Karlsruhe, where tools, small machines and railway equipment were manufactured. In 1840/1841 the Royal Württemberg Railway Commission tendered for railway construction and the production of rolling stock to pave the way for the Royal Württemberg State Railways (''Königlich Württembergische Staats-Eisenbahnen''). Firebox (locomotive)
In a steam engine, the firebox is the area where the fuel is burned, producing heat to boil the water in the boiler. Most are somewhat box-shaped, hence the name. The hot gases generated in the firebox are pulled through a rack of tubes running through the boiler. Maffei (company)
Maffei was a manufacturer of railway locomotives based in Munich, Germany. Established in 1836, it prospered for nearly a century before going bankrupt in 1930 and becoming amalgamated with the firm of Krauss to form Krauss-Maffei. Following another seventy years of prosperity Krauss-Maffei merged with Demag and Mannesmann in 1999, the resulting conglomerate in turn being sold to Siemens AG. Perhaps J. A.
