Emil Kessler
Emil Julius Carl Kessler (20 August 1813 - 16 March 1867) was a German businessman and founder of the Maschinenfabrik Esslingen ('Esslingen Engineering Works'). Biography Kessler was born in Baden-Baden, attended school there and later studied constructional and mechanical engineering in Karlsruhe. In 1837 he founded an engineering works with Theodor Martiensen in Karlsruhe, where tools, small machines and railway equipment were manufactured. In 1840/1841 the Royal Württemberg Railway Commission tendered for railway construction and the production of rolling stock to pave the way for the Royal Württemberg State Railways (''Königlich Württembergische Staats-Eisenbahnen''). Kessler's bid was successful and in 1841 he built his first steam locomotive, the '' Badenia'' for the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railway (''Großherzoglich Badische Staatsbahn''). Esslingen am Neckar ( Swabian: ''Esslenga am Neckor'') is a town in the Stuttgart Region of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany, seat of the District of Esslingen as well as the largest town in the district. Max Mayer (16 September 1886 in Salzburg – 29 July 1967 in Starnberg) was a German civil engineer. Biography Mayer received his doctorate in 1913 from the TU Munich (''Economy as a Design principle in Reinforced Concrete Construction''). From 1914 (during the WWI and the subsequent Weimar Republic) Mayer spoke and published on reforming construction in line with the scientific management ideas set out by the American mechanical engineer Frederick Winslow Taylor. From 1926 to 1930 he was a professor at the state building college in Weimar and then a consulting engineer in Munich. The Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Karlsruhe ('Karlsruhe Engineering Works') was a locomotive and railway wagon manufacturer in the early days of the German railways. It was based at Karlsruhe in what is now the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. The origins of the firm go back to an engineering works founded in Karlsruhe in 1837 by Emil Kessler and Theodor Martiensen. In 1842, the first steam locomotive, ''Badenia'', was delivered to the Baden state railways. Maschinenfabrik Esslingen (ME), was a German engineering firm that manufactured locomotives, tramways, railway wagons, roll-blocks, technical equipment for the railways, (turntables and traversers), bridges, steel structures, pumps and boilers. The Grand Duchy of Baden was an independent state in what is now southwestern Germany until the creation of the German Empire in 1871. The engines of Baden Class I bAlso referred to as Class I b (old) to distinguish them from those given the same classification in 1868. were very early German steam locomotives built for the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railways. History The Class I b locomotives were copies of the first six Baden machines, the Class I a. The ''Badenia'' built by Emil Kessler in 1841 was the first locomotive to be built in Baden and the first of nine engines of its class.
