The engines of Baden Class I bAlso referred to as Class I b (old) to distinguish them from those given the same classification in 1868. were very early German steam locomotives built for the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railways. History The Class I b locomotives were copies of the first six Baden machines, the Class I a. The ''Badenia'' built by Emil Kessler in 1841 was the first locomotive to be built in Baden and the first of nine engines of its class. Kessler built this engine together with his partner Martiensen at his own expense and then placed it experimentally in service. Because it achieved the same level of performance as its English prototypes, it was taken over by the state railway. On the line between Heidelberg und Wiesloch one locomotive achieved a speed of 54 km/h with 20 wagons. On a fast run the engines could manage 85 km/h. Emil Keßler
Emil Julius Carl Kessler (20 August 1813 - 16 March 1867) was a German businessman and founder of the Maschinenfabrik Esslingen ('Esslingen Engineering Works'). Biography Kessler was born in Baden-Baden, attended school there and later studied constructional and mechanical engineering in Karlsruhe. In 1837 he founded an engineering works with Theodor Martiensen in Karlsruhe, where tools, small machines and railway equipment were manufactured. In 1840/1841 the Royal Württemberg Railway Commission tendered for railway construction and the production of rolling stock to pave the way for the Royal Württemberg State Railways (''Königlich Württembergische Staats-Eisenbahnen''). Kessler's bid was successful and in 1841 he built his first steam locomotive, the '' Badenia'' for the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railway (''Großherzoglich Badische Staatsbahn''). Steam Dome
The steam dome is a vessel fitted to the top of the boiler of a steam engine. It contains the opening to the main steam pipe and its purpose is to allow this opening to be kept well above the water level in the boiler. This arrangement acts as a simple steam separator and minimises the risk that water will be carried over to the cylinders where it might cause a hydraulic lock, also known as priming. Running Gear
In railway terminology the term running gear refers to those components of a railway vehicle that run passively on the rails, unlike those of the driving gear. Traditionally these are the wheels, axles, axle boxes, springs and vehicle frame of a railway locomotive or wagon.
