Bardenas Reales 1
Bardenas (founded in 1959, until 2008 its name was ''Bardena del Caudillo''), is a settlement in the municipality of Ejea de los Caballeros, in the province of Zaragoza. History It was founded on April 8, 1959, as ''Bardena del Caudillo'', due to its foundation during Franco's dictatorship and as a plan of the ''Instituto Nacional de Colonización'' (INC); at first it was intended to be baptized as ''El Saso'' in homage to the land near the area. At the same time, other colonization villages such as El Bayo or Santa Anastasia were also inaugurated, and the Bardenas Canal and the Yesa Reservoir were built. During the first months, several families settled in the town, reaching 15 by mid-August. In 1967 the number of settlers increased to 154, mostly from Ejea de los Caballeros, Alcalá de Moncayo, Tranquera, Rivas and Biota. Bardenas Canal
The Bardenas Canal is an aqueduct that carries water from the Navarre town of Yesa, in northern Spain, to the southern part of Navarre and Zaragoza. It originates at the dam of the Yesa reservoir, where the Pyrenean waters of the Aragón river accumulate to be transferred to irrigate the Bardenas Reales and the Aragonese region of Cinco Villas, and ends at the Ardisa reservoir, on the Gállego river. It contributes 8 hm³ (cubic hectometers) to the El Ferial reservoir in Bardenas. Ejea de los Caballeros (); an, Exeya d'os Caballers; (commonly known simply as Ejea) is a town and municipality in the province of Zaragoza, part of the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain. The Instituto Nacional de Colonización y Desarrollo Rural, en, National Institute of Rural Development and Colonization, was the administrative entity that was established by the Spanish State in October 1939, shortly after the end of the Spanish Civil War, in order to repopulate certain areas of Spain. This entity depended from the Ministry of Agriculture and it sought to alleviate the effects of the devastation caused by the three years of civil war. The Instituto acquired land which it transferred to the villagers under different conditions according to the area and the levels of poverty of the tenants. The tenants eventually were expected to pay a small sum that allowed them to become the future owners of the land they tilled. El Bayo
El Bayo is a settlement in the municipality of Ejea de los Caballeros, in the province of Zaragoza. History Along with other settler villages of Ejea de los Caballeros, this locality was inaugurated on April 8, 1959, and quickly the first settlers began to arrive, coming from Ejea, Biota, Carenas, Nuévalos, Farasdués, Gallur, Rivas, Uncastillo and Tiermas, among others. The village took its name from the medieval settlement that had existed in the same place from 1100 until 1380, when it was razed due to the clashes between Aragon and Navarre. In 1146, Ramiro II, nicknamed the ''Monk'', founded a Cistercian monastery, whose ruins still remain with important Romanesque remains. The Yesa Reservoir is located in the Pyrenees, and is formed with the damming of the Aragon River, in the Navarre town of Yesa (Spain), although the largest area of the reservoir is located in the province of Zaragoza, extending from east to west.
