Ambika Devi (artist)
Ambika Devi is an Indian artist, who works in the Madhubani art tradition. In 2009, she received the National Handicrafts Award for her contributions to art. Life Devi was born in Rasidpur village in Madhubani district, Bihar, and married into a family that was sustained by farming. She has stated that she initially painted at night, when work on the farm was completed, but later turned to painting as a career when she and her husband moved to Delhi. Her mother, Leela Devi, and her sister are also both award-winning Madhubani artists. Career Devi has stated that she learned to paint and draw in the Madhubani style from her mother, Leela Devi, who was a well-known Madhubani artist herself. Her initial paintings were in the traditional form, done with white paint made from powdered rice, on the walls and floors of her home. Ambika Devi
In Jainism, Ambika ( sa, अम्बिका, "Mother") or Ambika Devi ( "the Goddess-Mother") is the "dedicated attendant deity" or "protector goddess" of the 22nd Tirthankara, Neminatha. She is also known as ''Ambai'', ''Amba'', ''Kushmandini'' and ''Amra Kushmandini''. She is often shown with one or more children and often under a tree. She is frequently represented as a pair (Yaksha Sarvanubhuti on the right and Kushmandini on the left) with a small Tirthankar image on the top. Mithila painting is a style of painting practiced in the Mithila region of India and Nepal. Artists create these paintings using a variety of mediums, including their own fingers, or twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchstick. The paint is created using natural dyes and pigments. The paintings are characterised by their eye-catching geometrical patterns. There is ritual content for particular occasions, such as birth or marriage, and festivals, such as Holi, Surya Shasti, Kali Puja, Upanayana, and Durga Puja. Madhubani district is one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar, India, and is a part of Darbhanga division. Its administrative headquarters are located in Madhubani.
