Alexander Wilson Smith
Alexander Wilson Smith (November 12, 1856 – October 10, 1913) was a farmer and political figure in Ontario, Canada. He represented Middlesex North in the House of Commons of Canada from 1908 to 1911 as a Liberal. He was born in York County, Canada West, the son of James Sinclair Smith, a native of Scotland, and Agnes Wilson, and was educated at the Rockwood Academy and the Canadian Literary Institute in Woodstock, Ontario. Smith was a farmer and livestock breeder at Maple Lodge, Middlesex County. Smith was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1911. Middlesex North (federal Electoral District)
Middlesex North was a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1917. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867 which divided the County of Middlesex into three ridings: the Middlesex North, Middlesex West and Middlesex East. The North Riding consisted of the Townships of McGillivray and Biddulph (taken from the County of Huron), and Williams East, Williams West, Adelaide, and Lobo. In 1882, it was redefined add the township of Stephen and the villages of Ailsa Craig, Lucan, Exeter and Parkhill, and to exclude the townships of Adelaide and Lobo. In 1903, it was redefined to consist of the townships of Adelaide, Biddulph, Lobo, McGillivray, Williams East and Williams West, the town of Parkhill and the villages of Ailsa Craig and Lucan. York County is a historic county in Upper Canada, Canada West, and the Canadian province of Ontario. It was organized by the Upper Canada administration from the lands of the Toronto Purchase and others. Created in 1792, at its largest size, it encompassed the area that presently comprises the City of Toronto, the regional municipalities of Halton, Peel, and York as well as portions of Regional Municipality of Durham and the City of Hamilton. The Province of Canada (or the United Province of Canada or the United Canadas) was a British colony in North America from 1841 to 1867. Its formation reflected recommendations made by John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, in the Report on the Affairs of British North America following the Rebellions of 1837–1838. The Act of Union 1840, passed on 23 July 1840 by the British Parliament and proclaimed by the Crown on 10 February 1841, merged the Colonies of Upper Canada and Lower Canada by abolishing their separate parliaments and replacing them with a single one with two houses, a Legislative Council as the upper chamber and the Legislative Assembly as the lower chamber. James Sinclair Smith
James Sinclair Smith (December 27, 1816 – October 4, 1897) was a farmer, livestock breeder and political figure in Ontario, Canada. He represented Middlesex North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Ontario Liberal Party, Liberal member from 1867 to 1874. He was born in Caithness, Scotland in 1816. He served as reeve of McGillivray, Ontario, McGillivray Township in Middlesex County, Ontario, Middlesex County. He was defeated by John McDougall (Ontario MPP), John McDougall in the 1875 general election. Smith was postmaster at Maple Lodge in Middlesex County. His son Alexander Wilson Smith, Alexander served in the Canadian House of Commons. He died (supposedly) at McGillivray in 1897.
