Crimson Tide (film)
''Crimson Tide'' is a 1995 American action thriller film directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. It takes place during a period of political turmoil in Russia, in which ultranationalists threaten to launch nuclear missiles at the United States and Japan. The film focuses on a clash of wills between the seasoned commanding officer of a U.S. nuclear missile submarine ( Gene Hackman) and his new executive officer (Denzel Washington), arising from conflicting interpretations of an order to launch their missiles. The story parallels a real incident during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Hans Zimmer, who scored the film, won a Grammy Award for the main theme, which heavily uses synthesizers instead of traditional orchestral instruments. An extended cut, which incorporates seven minutes of deleted scenes, was released on DVD in 2006, while the 2008 Blu-ray release only includes the theatrical version. Clockers (film)
''Clockers'' is a 1995 American crime drama film directed by Spike Lee. It is an adaptation of the 1992 novel of the same name by Richard Price, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Lee. The film stars Harvey Keitel, John Turturro, Delroy Lindo, and Mekhi Phifer in his debut film role. Set in New York City, ''Clockers'' tells the story of Strike (Phifer), a street-level drug dealer who becomes entangled in a murder investigation. The film originally entered production with Martin Scorsese attached to direct; he had previously collaborated with Price on his 1986 film ''The Color of Money''. Scorsese eventually dropped out of production to focus on his passion project ''Casino'', at which point Lee stepped in to direct and rewrite the script, Scorsese remained a co-producer alongside Lee. Tomás Gutiérrez Alea (; December 11, 1928 – April 16, 1996) was a Cuban film director and screenwriter. He wrote and directed more than twenty features, documentaries, and short films, which are known for his sharp insight into post-Revolutionary Cuba, and possess a delicate balance between dedication to the revolution and criticism of the social, economic, and political conditions of the country. Gutiérrez's work is representative of a cinematic movement occurring in the 1960s and 1970s known collectively as the New Latin American Cinema. This collective movement, also referred to by various writers by specific names such as "Third Cinema", "Cine Libre", and "Imperfect Cinema," was concerned largely with the problems of neocolonialism and cultural identity. João César Monteiro
João César Monteiro Santos (2 February 1939, in Figueira da Foz – 3 February 2003, in Lisbon) was a Portuguese film director, actor, writer and film critic. Life and career João César Monteiro was born into a family with anti-clerical and anti-fascist ideals. His family moved to Lisbon when Monteiro was 15 years old to enable him to continue his studies. In 1963, with a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Monteiro traveled to Great Britain to study at the London Film School (known then as the London School of Film Technique). In 1965 in Portugal, he began work on his first film, '' Quem Espera por Sapatos de Defunto Morre Descalço'' (Who Waits for the Deceased's Shoes Dies Barefoot), which would not be finished for five years due to financial problems. ''God's Comedy'' ( pt, A Comédia de Deus) is a 1995 Portuguese film by João César Monteiro. It is the second part in a trilogy, preceded by '' Recordações da Casa Amarela'' (1989) (''Recollections of the Yellow House'') and followed by '' As Bodas de Deus'' (1999) (''Houses of God''). God is symbolized through the character ''João de Deus'' (lit.: John of God), played by writer/director Monteiro himself. Jos Stelling
Jos Stelling (born 16 July 1945) is a Dutch film director and screenwriter. Career He made his debut as a film director in 1974 with ''Mariken van Nieumegen'', which was selected for the official Cannes competition in 1975. In 1981 he founded the Dutch Film Days a festival for Dutch directors to give them the possibility to show their films and to create an informal platform for the filmmakers. He continued to serve as chairman and director until the 1991 edition. After he abdicated the festival was renamed the Dutch Film Festival. In 1989 he was a member of the jury at the 16th Moscow International Film Festival. In 2002 he was a member of the jury at the 24th Moscow International Film Festival. He was also the president of the jury of the 1st Odessa International Film Festival. Romuald Karmakar
Romuald Karmakar (born February 15, 1965) is a French film director, screenwriter and producer. He was born in Wiesbaden, Germany as the son of a Bengali father and a French mother. From 1977 to 1982 he lived in Athens. He has won several national and international awards, including the German National Film Award in Gold in 1996 for '' Der Totmacher'' (''Deathmaker''). His work has been honored with several retrospectives at festivals and cinematheques. ''Deathmaker'' () is a 1995 German film directed by Romuald Karmakar and starring Götz George, Jürgen Hentsch and Pierre Franckh. The film is based on the transcripts of the interrogation of the notorious serial killer Fritz Haarmann. The film received several awards and nominations. The film was awarded the Deutscher Filmpreis Best Feature Film, Deutscher Filmpreis Best Direction and Deutscher Filmpreis Best Actor in 1996. Anh Hung Tran
Trần Anh Hùng (born December 23, 1962) is a Vietnamese-born French film director and screenwriter. Early life Hùng was born in Mỹ Tho, South Vietnam. Following the fall of Saigon at the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, he immigrated to France at age 12. He majored in philosophy at a university in France. By chance, he saw Robert Bresson's film ''A Man Escaped'' and decided to study film instead. He went on to study photography at the Louis Lumiere Academy, which trains cinematographers. Film career Hùng has been at the forefront of a wave of acclaimed overseas Vietnamese cinema over the past two decades. His films have received international fame and acclaim, and his first three features were varied meditations on life in his home country Vietnam. It is about the hard lives of the labor force in early 1990s Ho Chi Minh City, and how people come under the influence of crime. The film is considered hard to understand because of abstract and wordless communication.
