2017 Speedway World Cup Event 2
Event Two of the 2017 Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup was the second race of the 2017 edition of the Speedway World Cup. It was staged on July 4 at the Stena Arena in Västervik, Sweden and was won by Sweden from Russia, Latvia, and Denmark. As a result, Sweden progressed directly to the 2017 Speedway World Cup Final, while Russia and Latvia progressed to the 2017 Speedway World Cup Race-off. Denmark were eliminated. Latvia and Denmark initially tied on 28 points after the 20 qualifying heats, however Andžejs Ļebedevs beat Niels-Kristian Iversen in a run-off to secure the Latvians place in the race-off. It was the first time since the Speedway World Cup was introduced in 2001 that Denmark had been eliminated at this stage. Antonio Lindbäck and Fredrik Lindgren top scored for Sweden with 11 and 10 points respectively, while Grigory Laguta led Russia with a 12-point haul. Grigory Laguta (born April 9, 1984) is a Russian-born Latvian motorcycle speedway rider. Laguta is current Individual Latvian Champion. He is a three-time Russian champion. In 2017 he was suspended for two years for a doping violation after having used meldonium. Laguta have two speedway licences: Russian (MFR) and Latvian (LaMSF). Michael Jepsen Jensen (born 18 February 1992) is a speedway rider from Denmark. Career He was part of the 2010 Under-21 World Cup winning Denmark team. He also won the 2012 Nordic Speedway Grand Prix becoming the 1st wildcard to have won a GP meeting since Hans Andersen. In November 2012 he won the Individual Under-21 World Championship. Gleb Chugunov
Gleb Chugunov (born 17 December 1999) is an international speedway rider from Russia, who rides on a Polish licence. Speedway career Chugunov won a bronze medal at the Speedway World Cup in the 2017 Speedway World Cup. The following year the competition was rebranded as the Speedway of Nations and Chugunov has twice been credited with a gold medal for being part of the victorious Russian side in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, he switched his licence and now represents Poland. Chugunov controversially revealed that he married a Polish girl in order to obtain a Polish racing licence. The marriage allowed him to race while Russian riders were banned. He signed for GKM Grudziądz for the 2023 Polish speedway season.
