1822–23 United States Senate Elections
The 1822–23 United States Senate elections were held on various dates in various states. As these United States Senate, U.S. Senate elections were prior to the ratification of the Seventeenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, Seventeenth Amendment in 1913, senators were chosen by State legislature (United States), state legislatures. Senators were elected over a wide range of time throughout 1822 and 1823, and a seat may have been filled months late or remained vacant due to Gridlock (politics), legislative deadlock. United States Senate

Federalist Party (United States)
The Federalist Party was a conservative political party which was the first political party in the United States. As such, under Alexander Hamilton, it dominated the national government from 1789 to 1801. Defeated by the Jeffersonian Republicans in 1800, it became a minority party while keeping its stronghold in New England and made a brief resurgence by opposing the War of 1812. It then collapsed with its last presidential candidate in 1816. Remnants lasted for a few years afterwards. The Democratic-Republican Party, known at the time as the Republican Party and also referred to as the Jeffersonian Republican Party among other names, was an American political party founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in the early 1790s that championed republicanism, agrarianism, political equality, and expansionism.
