The 2024–25 Washington Capitals season was the List of Washington Capitals seasons, 51st season (50th season of play) for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise that was established on June 11, 1974. On March 20, 2025, the Capitals became the first team to clinch a playoff spot and their second consecutive berth with a win over the 2024–25 Philadelphia Flyers season, Philadelphia Flyers. On April 4, 2025, captain Alexander Ovechkin scored his 894th goal, tying the List of NHL players with 500 goals, all-time record for goals scored in the regular season held by Wayne Gretzky. Ovechkin also recorded his 136th game-winning goal, setting a new record for game-winning goals, and surpassing the record previously held by Jaromír Jágr, Jaromir Jagr. Metropolitan Division (NHL)
The National Hockey League's Metropolitan Division (often referred to simply as the "Metro Division") was formed in 2013 as one of the two divisions in the Eastern Conference (NHL), Eastern Conference as part of a league realignment. It is also a successor of the original Atlantic Division (NHL, 1993–2013), Atlantic Division and one of the two successors to the Southeast Division (NHL), Southeast Division. Six of its teams were previously together in the Patrick Division from 1981 to 1993 (one joined in 1982). The Washington Capitals are a professional ice hockey team based in Washington, D.C. The team is a member of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Capitals played at the Capital Centre from their inaugural season in 1974 to 1997, when they moved to the MCI Center, now known as the Capital One Arena. In 49 completed seasons, the Capitals have qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs 33 times, making two Stanley Cup Finals appearances during the 1997–98 and 2017–18 seasons, winning the latter. The 2024–25 New Jersey Devils season was the 51st season for the National Hockey League franchise that was established on June 11, 1974, and 43rd season since the franchise relocated from Colorado prior to the 1982–83 NHL season. On April 9, 2025, the Devils clinched a playoff spot after missing the playoffs the previous season following the New York Rangers loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. On April 29, the Devils were defeated by the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the playoffs in five games. Hunter Shepard
Hunter Markus Shepard (born November 7, 1995) is an American professional ice hockey goaltender currently playing with the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL). Growing up in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, Shepard attended Grand Rapids High School where he played prep school hockey and baseball. In his senior year, he received a Minnesota Minute Men Mr. Hockey Award and joined the Bismarck Bobcats of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). After two seasons with the Bobcats, during which he won their Goaltender of the Year award, he was approached by the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs men's ice hockey (UMD) team to be their third goaltender. The 2024–25 Buffalo Sabres season was the 55th season of play for the Sabres in the National Hockey League (NHL). It was the team's first season with Lindy Ruff back as head coach since 2012-13 Buffalo Sabres season, 2013.
