Östgöta Nation, Lund
The Östgöta Nation, or locally ''ÖG'', is one of thirteen student nations of Lund University in Sweden. With its 1,896 members, it is the seventh-largest nation in Lund - ranking behind Kalmar but ahead of Hallands Nation. It is often considered the oldest of the university's nations and it celebrated its 350th anniversary in 2018. The name Östgöta refers to the Swedish Östergötland province. The nation was founded in the same year as the university was established – 1668. Around 40 students who had transferred from Uppsala University enrolled at the nation. With the Scanian War in 1676, the university was forced to close temporarily, as was the nation. The nation reopened in 1681, and has since 1686 maintained written details of all meetings; these full details still exist to this day. Student Nation
Student nations or simply nations ( meaning "being born") are regional corporations of students at a university. Once widespread across Europe in medieval times, they are now largely restricted to the oldest universities of Sweden and Finland, in part because of the violent conflicts between the nations in university towns in other countries. Medieval universities were cosmopolitan, with students from many different domestic and foreign regions. Students who were born within the same region usually spoke the same language, expected to be ruled by their own familiar laws, and therefore joined together to form the nations. In the English-speaking world, the institutions most closely comparable to the medieval nation system are perhaps the collegiate system of older British universities or fraternities at North American universities, though the comparisons are imperfect. Uppsala University
Uppsala University (UU) () is a public university, public research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the List of universities in Sweden, oldest university in Sweden and the Nordic countries still in operation. Nations At Lund University
A nation is a type of social organization where a collective identity, a national identity, has emerged from a combination of shared features across a given population, such as language, history, ethnicity, culture, territory, or society. Some nations are constructed around ethnicity (see ethnic nationalism) while others are bound by political constitutions (see civic nationalism). A nation is generally more overtly political than an ethnic group. Lund University Main Building
The main building of the Lund University ( in Swedish) was designed by architect Helgo Zettervall and inaugurated by King Oscar II in 1882. Construction began in 1874, when the old main building Kungshuset had become too small for the growing number of students. The design is characterised by Zettervall's fascination with classical antiquity, and features columns and fancy copings. There were originally four sphinxes on the roof, but they had to be removed within 30 years because of bad quality. In the 1990s, four new sphinxes were placed on the roof. Like many of Zettervall's buildings, it was criticized for a lack of uniformity and not being well thought out. Kungshuset
Kungshuset, the "King's House", is a building in Lund in Sweden, built by the Danish king Frederick II between 1578 and 1584 and originally intended as the residence for the bishop of Lund. After the secession of the Scanian lands to Sweden at the Treaty of Roskilde 1658 Lund University was founded in 1666 to enhance the Swedification of the Danish provinces. King Charles XI of Sweden donated the building to the university in 1688 to serve as its main building and library. Until around 1800 the entire university was contained in Kungshuset, which as well as the library contained a theatre for the demonstration of anatomical dissection. The building was used as an observatory by, amongst others, the university's first astronomer, Anders Spole. An often related local legend has it that king Charles XII of Sweden, who resided in Lund for a time between campaigns in the 1710s, rode up the wide wooden stairs in the tower. Lund Cathedral
Lund Cathedral () is a cathedral of the Lutheran Church of Sweden in Lund, Scania, Sweden. It is the seat of the Bishop of Lund and the main church of the Diocese of Lund. It was built as the Catholic cathedral of the archiepiscopal see of all the Nordic countries, dedicated to Saint Lawrence. It is one of the oldest stone buildings still in use in Sweden. Lund Cathedral has been called "the most powerful representative of Romanesque architecture in the Nordic countries." At the time of its construction, Lund and the cathedral belonged to Denmark. The Västgöta Nation, colloquially known as VG's, is one of thirteen Nations in Swedish universities, student nations at Lund University in Sweden. With its 2,670 members, it is the List of Lund University nations, fifth-largest nation in Lund - ranking behind Malmö Nation, Malmö but ahead of Kalmar Nation, Lund, Kalmar Nation. Scanian War
The Scanian War (; ; ; ) was a part of the Northern Wars involving the union of Denmark–Norway, Electorate of Brandenburg, Brandenburg and Swedish Empire, Sweden. It was fought from 1675 to 1679 mainly on Scanian soil, in the former Danish–Norwegian provinces along the border with Sweden, and in Northern Germany. While the latter battles are regarded as a theater of the Scanian war in English, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish historiography, they are seen as a separate war in German historiography, called the Swedish-Brandenburgian War (). Hallands Nation, Lund
Hallands nation is one of thirteen student nations of Lund University in Sweden. It has 1,238 members and is thus the ninth-largest student nation in Lund - ranking behind Östgöta but ahead of Blekingska Nationen. The youngest of Lund's nations, it originally organised students from the Swedish province of Halland, although nowadays there is no need for members to come from any particular region. History In 1920, a Hallandic student association was formed within Göteborgs Nation. Even from the start the main aim of the association was to break free and form a nation of its own, but it took some years of negotiation over the allocation of debts and assets before Hallands Nation was formed on October 15, 1928. Lund University
Lund University () is a Public university, public research university in Sweden and one of Northern Europe's oldest universities. Kalmar Nation is one of thirteen Nation (university), student nations of Lund University in Sweden. It has 2,360 members and is thus the List of Lund University nations, sixth-largest student nation in Lund - ranking behind Västgöta Nation, Lund, Västgöta but ahead of Östgöta Nation, Lund, Östgöta Nation.
