Västgöta Nation, Lund
The Västgöta Nation, colloquially known as VG's, is one of thirteen Nations in Swedish universities, student nations at Lund University in Sweden. With its 2,670 members, it is the List of Lund University nations, fifth-largest nation in Lund - ranking behind Malmö Nation, Malmö but ahead of Kalmar Nation, Lund, Kalmar Nation. History The Student nation, nation traces its history to 28 January 1669, exactly one year after the founding of Lund University. Due to the Scanian War from 1675 to 1679, the university's and the nation's activities were halted until 1685 for the nation's part. Since 1685, its traditions have followed an unbroken succession, although it merged with Östgöta Nation, Lund, Östgöta Nation and Kalmar Nation, Lund, Kalmar Nation as the united ''Götiska Nationen'' ("the Gothic Nation"), between 1767 and 1821 as a result of low student numbers at the university. Västergötland
Västergötland (), also known as West Gothland or the Latinized version Westrogothia in older literature, is one of the 25 traditional non-administrative provinces of Sweden (''landskap'' in Swedish), situated in the southwest of Sweden. Västergötland is home to Gothenburg, the second largest city in Sweden, which is situated along a short stretch of the Kattegat strait. This is a list of student nations at Lund University in Sweden. The tradition of nations at the university is practically as old as the university itself. The list is by default sorted in accordance with a time-honoured order based on the age of the diocese of the area that the nation was named after. The reason for this was that almost all students earlier came from gymnasiums, and these were only found in diocesan capitals. Östgöta Nation, Lund
The Östgöta Nation, or locally ''ÖG'', is one of thirteen student nations of Lund University in Sweden. With its 1,896 members, it is the seventh-largest nation in Lund - ranking behind Kalmar but ahead of Hallands Nation. It is often considered the oldest of the university's nations and it celebrated its 350th anniversary in 2018. The name Östgöta refers to the Swedish Östergötland province. The nation was founded in the same year as the university was established – 1668. Around 40 students who had transferred from Uppsala University enrolled at the nation. With the Scanian War in 1676, the university was forced to close temporarily, as was the nation. The nation reopened in 1681, and has since 1686 maintained written details of all meetings; these full details still exist to this day. Scanian War
The Scanian War (; ; ; ) was a part of the Northern Wars involving the union of Denmark–Norway, Electorate of Brandenburg, Brandenburg and Swedish Empire, Sweden. It was fought from 1675 to 1679 mainly on Scanian soil, in the former Danish–Norwegian provinces along the border with Sweden, and in Northern Germany. While the latter battles are regarded as a theater of the Scanian war in English, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish historiography, they are seen as a separate war in German historiography, called the Swedish-Brandenburgian War (). Kalmar Nation is one of thirteen Nation (university), student nations of Lund University in Sweden. It has 2,360 members and is thus the List of Lund University nations, sixth-largest student nation in Lund - ranking behind Västgöta Nation, Lund, Västgöta but ahead of Östgöta Nation, Lund, Östgöta Nation. Malmö Nation
Malmö is the third-largest city in Sweden, after Stockholm and Gothenburg, and the sixth-largest city in the Nordic region. Nations In Swedish Universities
The student nations or ''nationer'' at the two ancient universities in Uppsala and Lund, of which there are now thirteen at each university, are the oldest student societies in Sweden. The Uppsala nations have a history stretching back to around 1630–1640. The nations in Lund were formed at the time of the foundation of the university (1666) or shortly thereafter. Traditionally, students were required to be members of the nation corresponding to the area from which they came. With one exception, Södermanland-Nerikes nation at Uppsala, this requirement is now voided, and students may even join more than one nation. International students are also free to choose whichever nation they desire.
