William Hare, 3rd Earl Of Listowel
William Hare, 3rd Earl of Listowel KP JP (29 May 1833 – 5 June 1924), styled Viscount Ennismore from 1837 to 1856, was an Anglo-Irish peer and Liberal politician. Background Listowel was the eldest son of William Hare, 2nd Earl of Listowel, and Maria Augusta, widow of George Wyndham of Cromer Hall, Norfolk, and second daughter of Vice-Admiral of William Windham (formerly Lukin of Felbrigge Hall). He was educated at Eton before gaining a commission as a lieutenant in the Scots Fusiliers Guards. Military career He served with his regiment during the Crimean War (1854-6). At the Battle of Alma he was wounded on 30 September 1854, and was invalided out to England by ship. Political career In the 1855 general election he stood for the Liberal party in County Cork. He succeeded his father in the earldom in 1856 but as this was an Irish peerage it did not entitle him to a seat in the House of Lords. The Peerage of the United Kingdom is one of the five Peerages in the United Kingdom. It comprises most peerages created in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland after the Acts of Union in 1801, when it replaced the Peerage of Great Britain. New peers continued to be created in the Peerage of Ireland until 1898 (the last creation was the Barony of Curzon of Kedleston). The House of Lords Act 1999 reformed the House of Lords. Until then, all peers of the United Kingdom were automatically members of the House of Lords. However, from that date, most of the hereditary peers ceased to be members, whereas the life peers retained their seats. Earl of Listowel (pronounced "Lish-''toe''-ell") is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1822 for William Hare, 1st Viscount Ennismore and Listowel, who had earlier represented Cork City and Athy in the Irish House of Commons. He had already been created Baron Ennismore, of Ennismore in the County of Kerry, in 1800, and Viscount Ennismore and Listowel, in 1816, also in the Peerage of Ireland. His grandson, the second Earl, represented Kerry and St Albans in the British House of Commons. He was succeeded by his eldest son, the third Earl. In 1869 he was created Baron Hare, of Convamore in the County of Cork, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which gave him an automatic seat in the House of Lords. William Mansfield, 1st Viscount Sandhurst
William Mansfield, 1st Viscount Sandhurst (21 August 1855 – 2 November 1921) was a British Liberal politician and colonial governor. He was Governor of Bombay between 1895 and 1900 and Lord Chamberlain of the Household between 1912 and 1921. Background and early life Mansfield was the son of William Mansfield, 1st Baron Sandhurst, and Margaret, daughter of Robert Fellowes, and a noted suffragist. He served in the Coldstream Guards, achieving the rank of lieutenant. Political career Mansfield succeeded his father as Baron Sandhurst in 1876, aged 20, and was entitled to a seat in the House of Lords from his 21st birthday a few months later. When the Liberals came to power under William Ewart Gladstone in 1880, he was appointed a Lord-in-waiting, a post he held until 1885 when the Liberals left office. Lieutenant-General Dudley Charles FitzGerald-de Ros, 23rd Baron de Ros of Helmsley, (11 March 1827 – 29 April 1907) was a soldier, courtier and the premier Baron of England. Biography He was the son of William FitzGerald-de Ros and Lady Georgiana Lennox. He was born in Brighton. He purchased a commission as cornet and sub-lieutenant in the 1st Life Guards on 7 February 1845, succeeding Viscount Seaham, and a lieutenancy on 5 May 1848 when Seaham retired. He purchased a captaincy on 31 October 1851, succeeding Thomas Myddelton Biddulph, and on 30 August 1859, he purchased a commission as major and lieutenant-colonel upon the retirement of James Hogg. He was breveted colonel on 30 August 1864. FitzGerald-de Ros retired on half-pay on 29 May 1872. Fleet Street
Fleet Street is a major street mostly in the City of London. It runs west to east from Temple Bar at the boundary with the City of Westminster to Ludgate Circus at the site of the London Wall and the River Fleet from which the street was named. The street has been an important through route since Roman times. During the Middle Ages, businesses were established and senior clergy lived there; several churches remain from this time including Temple Church and St Bride's. The street became known for printing and publishing at the start of the 16th century, and it became the dominant trade so that by the 20th century most British national newspapers operated from here. Much of that industry moved out in the 1980s after News International set up cheaper manufacturing premises in Wapping, but some former newspaper buildings are listed and have been preserved. John Hugh Hare, 1st Viscount Blakenham, OBE, PC, DL (22 January 1911 – 7 March 1982) was a British Conservative politician. Background and education Blakenham was the third son of The Rt. Hon.
