Wild Geese Trophy
The Wild Geese Trophy is a hurling competition which was first played in 2018 at the Spotless Stadium in Sydney. The 2018 contest was between 2018 Allianz Hurling League Division 1 Champions Kilkenny and 2017 All-Ireland Hurling Championship winners Galway, in what was the first ever full-format game of hurling to take place outside of Ireland. 2018 Galway won the first ever Wild Geese trophy after overcoming Kilkenny following a free-taking competition after the game finished in a draw in the Spotless Stadium in Sydney. Galway had trailed by 14 points towards the end of the first half. Galway County Hurling Team
The Galway county hurling team ( ) represents County Galway, Galway in hurling and is governed by Galway GAA, the County board (Gaelic games), county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship and the National Hurling League. It formerly competed in the abolished Connacht Senior Hurling Championship, winning the last title in 1999. Galway's home ground is Pearse Stadium, Salthill. The team's manager is Henry Shefflin. Colm Callanan
Colm Callanan (born 18 July 1982) is an Irish hurler who plays for Galway Senior Championship club Kinvara. He played for the Galway senior hurling team for 12 years, during which time he lined out as a goalkeeper. Born in Kinvara, County Galway, Callanan was born into a strong hurling family. His mother, Mary Daly, played camogie and was an All-Ireland medal winner with Athenry while also playing for Galway and Connacht. Callanan first played competitive hurling with the Kinvara club at juvenile and underage levels. In spite of beginning his club career as an outfield player, he was eighteen when he became the goalkeeper on the club's senior team. Callanan made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of eighteen when he was selected for the Galway minor team. History Of Hurling
The history of hurling is long and often unclear, stretching back over three millennia. References to stick-and-ball games are found in Irish mythology. The game is thought to be related to the games of shinty that is played primarily in Scotland, cammag on the Isle of Man and bandy that was played formerly in England and Wales. Conor Martin
Conor Martin (born 1994) is an Irish hurler who plays as a left corner-forward for the Kilkenny senior team. Born in Urlingford, County Kilkenny, Martin first played competitive hurling at juvenile and underage levels with the Emeralds club. He subsequently joined the club's senior team. He won a Fitzgibbon Cup medal in 2015 while playing with University of Limerick. Martin made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he was selected for the Kilkenny minor team. He had two championship seasons with the minor team. Jason Cleere
Jason Cleere (born 1 August 1996) is an Irish hurler who plays for Kilkenny Senior Championship club Bennettsbridge and at inter-county level with the Kilkenny senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a left wing-back. Playing career St. Kieran's College Cleere first came to prominence as a hurler with St. Kieran's College in Kilkenny. Having played in every grade as a hurler, he was eventually called up the college's senior team. Eoin Murphy (born 6 August 1990) is an Irish hurling, hurler who plays for Kilkenny Intermediate Hurling Championship, Kilkenny Intermediate Championship club Glenmore GAA, Glenmore and at inter-county level with the Kilkenny senior hurling team. Richie Hogan
Richard Hogan (born 8 August 1988) is an Irish hurler who played as a midfielder at senior level for the Kilkenny county team from 2007 until 2023. Born in Waterford in 1988, Hogan is a native of Danesfort, County Kilkenny. Hogan first played competitive hurling during his schooling at St Kieran's College. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of fifteen when he first linked up with the Kilkenny minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He joined the senior panel during the 2007 championship. Hogan soon became a regular member of the starting fifteen and has won seven All-Ireland medals, seven Leinster medals and four National Hurling League medals. Niall Burke
Niall Burke (born 21 May 1991) is an Irish hurler who, as of 2012, played as a centre-forward at senior level for the Galway county team. Burke made his first appearance for the team during the 2012 National League and immediately became a regular member of the team. Shane Moloney
Shane Moloney (born 4 March 1993) is an Irish hurler who plays as a corner-forward for the Galway senior team. At club level he plays with Tynagh-Abbey/Duniry. Moloney captained Galway as they won the All-Ireland title in 2011 where he scored 1-9 in the final against Dublin. On 16 August 2015, he came on as a substitute with five minutes remaining in Galway's All-Ireland Senior Hurling Semi-final against Tipperary. With the game into the last of the three minutes of stoppage time, Moloney scored the winning point to put Galway into the final. Cathal Mannion (born 22 October 1994) is an Irish hurler who plays for Galway Senior Championship club Ahascragh-Fohenagh and at inter-county level with the Galway senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a left corner-forward. Playing career Ahascragh-Fohenagh Mannion joined the Ahascragh-Fohenagh club at a young age and played in all grades at juvenile and underage levels before eventually joining the club's top adult team. On 21 October 2016, Mannion scored a goal when Ahascragh-Fohenagh defeated Ballinderreen by 2-15 to 0-08 to win the Galway Intermediate Championship.
