Wapsie Valley High School (WVHS) is a public high school in northeastern Iowa, part of the Wapsie Valley Community School District. It is located equidistantly between Readlyn and Fairbank. North Iowa Cedar League
The North Iowa Cedar League (NICL) is a high school athletic conference made up of 15 high schools in north central and northeast Iowa. Most of the schools compete as 2A schools, (the second-smallest classification). The conference's most recent expansions included: Columbus Catholic (2013), Sumner-Fredericksburg (2014), and Oelwein (2021). With the addition of Oelwein in the 2021 academic year, the conference will split into three divisions: East, Central, and West. The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) is the regulating body for male Iowa high school interscholastic athletics and is a full member of the National Federation of State High School Associations. Its female counterpart, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, (IGHSAU) is an associate member. Iowa is the only state that maintains separate governing bodies for boys' and girls' athletics. Chris Jans
Christopher Paul Jans (born April 12, 1969) is the American college basketball head coach for Mississippi State. Jans previously coached at New Mexico State, where he led the Aggies from 2017 to 2022. Jans is a graduate of Loras College, and hails from Fairbank, Iowa. Brooks McKowen
Brooks McKowen is an American college basketball coach, currently the head coach of the Peacocks at Upper Iowa University. He had a successful career at Wapsie Valley High School in his hometown of Fairbank, Iowa, finishing as the state's all-time scoring leader and winning Iowa Mr. Basketball honors in 2003. McKowen then played basketball at Northern Iowa under Greg McDermott and Ben Jacobson. After his playing days were over, he stayed at Northern Iowa as a graduate assistant, then as a video coordinator. In 2010, he left and spent one season as an assistant coach at Des Moines Area Community College. Afterwards, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Southwest Minnesota State University under head coach Brad Bigler.
