Vinton, Iowa
Vinton is a city in Benton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 4,938 in the 2020 census, a decrease from 5,102 in 2000. It is also part of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area. Vinton is the county seat of Benton County. History Vinton was founded in 1849. It was named for Hon. Plynn Vinton, a state legislator. The first railroad line was extended to Vinton in 1869, and it was incorporated as a city that same year. In 2022, the library in Vinton closed after its full-time employees quit following complaints and allegations by patrons that included: the head librarian's "hiring and support for LGBTQ+ staff"; books by Jill Biden and Kamala Harris, and none about Donald Trump; "LGBTQ-themed book displays in the children’s section"; and male staff members "wearing dresses". Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District (VSCSD) is a school district headquartered in Vinton, Iowa. Most of the district is in Benton County with a small section in Buchanan County. In addition to Vinton it serves Shellsburg and Garrison. The district was established on July 1, 1993, by the merger of the Vinton Community School District and the Shellsburg Community School District. Benton Community High School
Benton Community High School is a rural public high school located in Van Horne, Iowa. It is the only high school in the Benton Community School District, and serves students from Van Horne, Atkins, Blairstown, Elberon, Keystone, Newhall, Norway and Watkins. History While the Benton Community School District was formed in 1964, Benton Community High School did not open until the fall of 1965. The new BCHS drew students from the former Keystone School District, Van Horne School District, Newhall School District and Blairstown School District. Beginning in 1967, BCHS absorbed students from the former Elberon Independent School District. In a controversial 1991 decision, nearby Norway High School was merged into BCHS. Audubon is a city and the county seat in Audubon County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,053 in the 2020 census, a decline from 2,382 in the 2000 census. History The city is named for John James Audubon the world-famous ornithologist, artist, and painter. Audubon was laid out by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, on September 23, 1878. An auction sale of town lots was held on October 15, 1878, with a total sales of $6,190. The railroad was completed on December 6, 1878, and by December 16, 1878, over fifty houses, a bank, five general stores, one jewelry store, two hotels, one restaurant, three meat markets, three blacksmith shops, one harness shop, one livery stable, two coal yards, two lumber yards, one elevator, three grain dealers, and a school house were built. Moulton-Udell High School
Moulton-Udell High School is an Appanoose County public school located in Moulton, Iowa, that serves pupils from grades seven through twelve. It became consolidated school serving the former Moulton High and Udel High in 1959. The school mascot is the Eagle. History In 1869, the Christian Church housed Moulton's first public school, and the first high school building was later erected in the northeast part of town. In 1897 a three story school was built, with a college on the third floor. Later came a gym, and classrooms were added to that building in 1938. By the end of November 1956, discussions had begun to explore consolidation of Moulton and Udell schools.
