West Indian Cricket Team In England In 1906
The West Indian cricket team toured England in the 1906 season. The team played 19 matches between 11 June and 18 August 1906 of which 13 were regarded as first-class. A somewhat more formal selection process seems to have been followed than for the 1900 tour but the team was still selected by representatives from Barbados, British Guiana and Trinidad. The team was perhaps a little stronger than that of 1900 but two tours to the West Indies in 1901-02 and 1904-05 had shown again that the combined West Indies team was of quite a modest standard compared to English first-class counties. Despite this the same mistake was made as in 1900 and an overly ambitious tour programme was arranged. This included 19 matches, mostly against first-class counties. 1906 English Cricket Season
1906 was the 17th season of County Championship cricket in England. The title was decided in the final round of matches with Kent County Cricket Club finishing just ahead of Yorkshire. George Hirst completed a unique "double Double" of 2,385 runs and 208 wickets. Tom Hayward broke Bobby Abel’s 1901 record for the most runs scored in a first-class season. George Learmond (cricketer)
George Cyril Learmond (4 July 1875 – 2 March 1918) was a West Indian cricketer who toured with both of the first two touring sides to England in 1900 and 1906. Biography Born on 4 July 1875 in Georgetown, Demerara, British Guiana, Learmond made his debut in important matches for Barbados against Slade Lucas's team in 1894–95 scoring an impressive 86 in his second match. The next season, he made his debut in the Inter-Colonial Tournament for Barbados scoring 59. From 1896–97 he played for British Guiana making his debut against Jamaica and later that season played against Lord Hawke's team. He was described before the 1900 tour as "(Demerara) Twenty four years of age. Learned his cricket in Barbados. Splendid bat, rapid run-getter, with sound defence. Archie Cumberbatch
Archibald Belford Cumberbatch (born 1 June 1879; death details unknown) was a West Indian cricketer who toured England in 1906. He was a right arm fast bowler. Although raised in Barbados he found few opportunities there and moved to Trinidad in 1896 to serve as groundsman to Queen's Park Cricket Club in Port-of-Spain. In 1896–97 he played for Trinidad against both Lord Hawke's team and Priestley's team, playing for the combined West Indies side and taking an incredible 45 wickets in the 5 matches. Even in Trinidad being a Professional limited his opportunities to play in important matches, the Inter-Colonial Tournament being restricted to Amateurs only. He returned to Barbados briefly in 1899 before moving to Jamaica to play for the Lucas Cricket Club in Kingston. John Joseph Cameron (28 May 1882 in Kingston, Jamaica – 12 December 1954 in Kingston, Jamaica) was a West Indian cricketer who toured with the second West Indian touring side to England in 1906. A Doctor, he was a right-handed batsman and a slow right arm bowler. British Guiana
British Guiana was a British colony, part of the mainland British West Indies, which resides on the northern coast of South America. Since 1966 it has been known as the independent nation of Guyana. Claude Keith Bancroft (30 October 1885 in Fontabelle, St Michael, Barbados – 12 January 1919 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) was a West Indian cricketer who toured with the second West Indian touring side to England in 1906 as their wicket-keeper. In 1904–05 he played for Barbados against Lord Brackley's team and then for the combined West Indies team in Barbados. He was chosen as the wicket-keeper for the 1906 tour to England. Before the tour he was described as "the wicket-leeper of the team, and will be of immense value to his side. Barbados
Barbados is an island country in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, in the Caribbean region of the Americas, and the most easterly of the Caribbean Islands. The captain of a cricket team, often referred to as the skipper, is the appointed leader, having several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of the other players. Derbyshire CCC
Derbyshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Derbyshire. Its limited overs team is called the Derbyshire Falcons in reference to the famous peregrine falcon which nests on the Derby Cathedral (it was previously called the Derbyshire Scorpions until 2005 and the Phantoms until 2010).
