Keith Bancroft
Claude Keith Bancroft (30 October 1885 in Fontabelle, St Michael, Barbados – 12 January 1919 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) was a West Indian cricketer who toured with the second West Indian touring side to England in 1906 as their wicket-keeper. In 1904–05 he played for Barbados against Lord Brackley's team and then for the combined West Indies team in Barbados. He was chosen as the wicket-keeper for the 1906 tour to England. Before the tour he was described as "the wicket-leeper of the team, and will be of immense value to his side. Is at present studying at Cambridge, having won the last Barbados Scholarship" and "he is in residence at Cambridge as the team arrives in England. A wicketkeeper who is said to be very alert with the gloves. The Straits Settlements cricket team was the team that represented the Straits Settlements in international cricket matches between 1890 and 1940. History Between 1890 and 1909, the Straits Settlements played regular Interport matches against Hong Kong, Ceylon and Shanghai. The Federated Malay States cricket team was a team that represented the Federated Malay States in international cricket matches between 1905 and 1940. Cricket has been played in Peninsular Malaysia since the 1880s, and the Federated Malay States usually combined with the Straits Settlements cricket team to form the Malaya cricket team. Historical background The development of cricket in all countries has been shaped by historical events but perhaps nowhere else is this more so than in the West Indies where not only colonialism, but also slavery shaped society. In 1492, the "New World" was discovered by a Spanish naval expedition under Columbus which reached the Caribbean Sea and found the Bahamas; and hence the creation of the West Indies. In 1609, the first British settlement in the West Indies was on Bermuda by shipwrecked English colonists originally bound for Virginia. The settlement became permanent in 1612. In 1623, the first British colony in the Caribbean itself was established at St Kitts in the Leeward Islands. In 1628, British colonists began to settle on Barbados which had been uninhabited. Saint Michael, Barbados
The parish of St. Michael is one of eleven parishes of Barbados. It has a land area of and is found at the southwest portion of the island. Saint Michael has survived by name as one of the original six parishes created in 1629 by Governor Sir William Tufton. The parish is home to Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados. Bridgetown is the centre of commercial activity in Barbados, as well as a central hub for the public transport network. West Indian Cricket Team In England In 1906
The West Indian cricket team toured England in the 1906 season. The team played 19 matches between 11 June and 18 August 1906 of which 13 were regarded as first-class. A somewhat more formal selection process seems to have been followed than for the 1900 tour but the team was still selected by representatives from Barbados, British Guiana and Trinidad. The team was perhaps a little stronger than that of 1900 but two tours to the West Indies in 1901-02 and 1904-05 had shown again that the combined West Indies team was of quite a modest standard compared to English first-class counties. Despite this the same mistake was made as in 1900 and an overly ambitious tour programme was arranged. This included 19 matches, mostly against first-class counties.
