Washington Sewallis Shirley, 9th Earl Ferrers
Washington Sewallis Shirley, 9th Earl Ferrers (3 January 1822 – 13 March 1859), styled Hon. Washington Shirley from 1827 to 1830 and Viscount Tamworth from 1830 to 1842, was a British nobleman. The elder son of Robert William Shirley, Viscount Tamworth, he succeeded his father as heir apparent in 1830. Tamworth, as he then was, was educated at Eton College and succeeded his grandfather, Washington, in the earldom in 1842. On 23 July 1844, he married Augusta Annabella Chichester, daughter of Lord Edward Chichester (later Marquess of Donegall), at St George's, Hanover Square. Eton College
Eton College () is a public school in Eton, Berkshire, England. It was founded in 1440 by Henry VI under the name ''Kynge's College of Our Ladye of Eton besyde Windesore'',Nevill, p. 3 ff. intended as a sister institution to King's College, Cambridge, making it the 18th-oldest Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC) school. Staunton Harold
Staunton Harold is a civil parish in North West Leicestershire about north of Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The parish is on the county boundary with Derbyshire and about south of Derby. The 2011 Census (including Lount) recorded the parish's population as 141. A brook flows from the south through the parish, heading for the River Trent which it joins about to the north. In the parish the brook is dammed to form a pair of small lakes. Nikolaus Pevsner (later Sir Nikolaus) described the view westwards across the lakes to Staunton Harold Hall and Holy Trinity parish church as ''"unsurpassed in the country – certainly as far as Englishness is concerned"''. Downstream from Staunton Harold, just over over the boundary in Derbyshire, the brook is dammed again to form Staunton Harold Reservoir. Sewallis Shirley, 10th Earl Ferrers
Sewallis Edward Shirley, 10th Earl Ferrers KStJ (24 January 1847 – 26 July 1912), styled Viscount Tamworth until 1859, was a British peer. He was the son of Washington Sewallis Shirley, 9th Earl Ferrers and Lady Augusta Annabella Chichester. Ferrers was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took a B.A. in 1867 and an M.A. in 1871. He was appointed a deputy lieutenant of Derbyshire and, on 8 February 1869, of Staffordshire. Ferrers was also commissioned as a lieutenant in the Staffordshire Yeomanry cavalry on 8 February 1868. He resigned his commission in 1871. He was appointed a Knight of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.St.J.) and was Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Derbyshire. On 24 October 1885, at St George's, Hanover Square, he married Lady Ina Maude Hedges-White, daughter of William Hedges-White, 3rd Earl of Bantry and Jane Herbert. Earl Ferrers
Earl Ferrers is a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created in 1711 for Robert Shirley, 1st Earl Ferrers, Robert Shirley, 14th Baron Ferrers of Chartley. The Shirley family descends from George Shirley (died 1622) of Astwell Castle, Northamptonshire. In 1611 he was created a Baronet, of Staunton Harold in the County of Leicester, in the Baronetage of England. He was succeeded by his son Henry, the second Baronet, who married Lady Dorothy Devereux, daughter of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex. On the death of her brother Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex, she became the youngest co-heir to the baronies of Ferrers of Chartley and the barony of Bourchier, which had fallen into abeyance on the death of the third Earl. Shirley was succeeded by his eldest son, the third Baronet. He died unmarried and was succeeded by his younger brother, the fourth Baronet. Washington Shirley, 8th Earl Ferrers (13 November 1760 – 2 October 1842), styled Hon. Washington Shirley from 1778 to 1827, was a British nobleman. The third son of Robert Shirley, 6th Earl Ferrers, he was educated at Westminster School. On 19 May 1780, he was appointed a cupbearer in the Royal Household, but this sinecure was abolished on 14 November 1782. Shirley married Frances (d. 4 March 1812), daughter of Rev. William Ward and granddaughter of William Ward, on 24 July 1781 at Gretna Green.
