Sewallis Shirley, 10th Earl Ferrers
Sewallis Edward Shirley, 10th Earl Ferrers KStJ (24 January 1847 – 26 July 1912), styled Viscount Tamworth until 1859, was a British peer. He was the son of Washington Sewallis Shirley, 9th Earl Ferrers and Lady Augusta Annabella Chichester. Ferrers was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took a B.A. in 1867 and an M.A. in 1871. He was appointed a deputy lieutenant of Derbyshire and, on 8 February 1869, of Staffordshire. Ferrers was also commissioned as a lieutenant in the Staffordshire Yeomanry cavalry on 8 February 1868. He resigned his commission in 1871. He was appointed a Knight of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.St.J.) and was Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Derbyshire. On 24 October 1885, at St George's, Hanover Square, he married Lady Ina Maude Hedges-White, daughter of William Hedges-White, 3rd Earl of Bantry and Jane Herbert. The Order of St John, short for Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem (french: l'ordre très vénérable de l'Hôpital de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem) and also known as St John International, is a British royal order of chivalry constituted in 1888 by royal charter from Queen Victoria and dedicated to St John the Baptist. The order traces its origins back to the Knights Hospitaller in the Middle Ages, which was later known as the Order of Malta. A faction of them emerged in France in the 1820s and moved to Britain in the early 1830s, where, after operating under a succession of grand priors and different names, it became associated with the founding in 1882 of the St John Ophthalmic Hospital near the old city of Jerusalem and the St John Ambulance Brigade in 1887. Walter Shirley, 11th Earl Ferrers
Walter Knight Shirley, 11th Earl Ferrers FRIBA (5 June 1864 – 2 February 1937) was a British architect and nobleman. Born at Christ Church, Oxford, where his father was a professor and canon, Shirley was the second but only surviving son of Rev. Walter Waddington Shirley (d. 1866) and his wife Philippa Knight. Educated at Winchester College and New College, Oxford, whence he took a B.A. in 1887, Shirley entered the profession of architecture and was articled to Basil Champneys. Part of the Arts and Crafts Movement, he was an active member of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and the Art Workers Guild, being elected Master in 1918. He designed a large addition to 35 Victoria Road, Kensington in 1896. Shirley's obituary described him as "a most conscientious architect...over-exacting, if anything, in his own work". Earl Ferrers is a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created in 1711 for Robert Shirley, 1st Earl Ferrers, Robert Shirley, 14th Baron Ferrers of Chartley. The Shirley family descends from George Shirley (died 1622) of Astwell Castle, Northamptonshire. In 1611 he was created a Baronet, of Staunton Harold in the County of Leicester, in the Baronetage of England. He was succeeded by his son Henry, the second Baronet, who married Lady Dorothy Devereux, daughter of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex. On the death of her brother Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex, she became the youngest co-heir to the baronies of Ferrers of Chartley and the barony of Bourchier, which had fallen into abeyance on the death of the third Earl. Shirley was succeeded by his eldest son, the third Baronet. He died unmarried and was succeeded by his younger brother, the fourth Baronet. William Henry Hare Hedges-White, 3rd Earl of Bantry (10 November 1801 – 15 January 1884) was an Anglo-Irish Conservative peer. He was the second son of Richard White, 1st Earl of Bantry and Lady Margaret Anne Hare. In 1840 he took the additional surname of Hedges after inheriting the estates of his great-uncle, Robert Hedges Eyre. He served as High Sheriff of County Cork in 1848.
