Wakefern Food Corporation is an American company that was founded in 1946 and is based in Keasbey, New Jersey. It is the largest retailers' cooperative group of supermarkets and the fourth-largest cooperative of any kind in the United States. Wakefern was the largest private employer in New Jersey in 2018, with 40,200 employees. As of 2021, Wakefern has fifty member companies who own and operate 362 supermarkets, under the brands of ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Dearborn Market, Gourmet Garage, and Fairway Market in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Virginia. ShopRite is a retailers' cooperative of supermarkets with stores in six states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Based in Keasbey, New Jersey, ShopRite consists of 50 individually owned and operated affiliates with over 300 stores, all under its corporate and distribution arm, Wakefern Food Corporation. Wakefern itself owns and operates 28 of the locations through subsidiary ShopRite Supermarkets and is the largest affiliate within the cooperative. Several Wakefern members own and operate single ShopRite stores, while most own multiple locations. The average Wakefern member operates six stores. The Fresh Grocer is a supermarket chain based in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania that operates thirteen stores in the Greater Philadelphia region of Pennsylvania. Founded in 1996 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as an independent company, the company became a member of the Wakefern Food Corporation, a retailers' cooperative, in 2013. History The Fresh Grocer opened in 1996 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Fresh Grocer has locations on Walnut Street (Philadelphia), Walnut Street and Broad Street (Philadelphia), Broad Street in North Philadelphia. Keasbey is an unincorporated community located within Woodbridge Township, in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It is located on the western outskirts of Perth Amboy. Through its proximity to Perth Amboy, and through natural outflow, attraction, and migration, Keasbey is also home to many Hispanic or Latino families. Keasbey was originally known as Florida GroveVirginia B. Gourmet Garage is a chain of specialty/natural food markets with four locations in Manhattan as of 2022. The enterprise began as Flying Foods, a specialty food distributor, and transitioned into retail in 1992. Gourmet Garage's 3 locations were purchased by Village Super Markets, a member of the Wakefern Food Corporation cooperative, in 2019. History Flying Foods was launched in 1981 by college roommates, Andy Arons and Walter Martin, and Paul Moriates, whom Martin met during a brief tenure working at Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
