WYAY (106.3 FM, "Carolina Gold") is a radio station broadcasting an oldies format. Licensed to Bolivia, North Carolina, United States, WYAY serves the Wilmington area. The station is currently owned by Maryland Media One. History The 106.3 frequency was WCCA, a beach music station and then a classic country station. before taking over the call letters and talk format previously heard on what is now 103.7 WILT when Sea-Comm Media purchased the station. With the callsign WLTT, 106.3 became a news/talk station called "The Big Talker" and in 2004, WWTB, an adult standards station at 103.9 FM which was licensed to Topsail Beach, North Carolina, began airing the same programming. Sea-Comm general manager Paul Knight called the format a "not-politically-correct talk station." This simulcast ended when the WBNE 93.7 frequency took the role, moving to Topsail Beach and changing its callsign to WNTB. WLTT changed its license city in 2009 from Shallotte to Bolivia. Bolivia is a town in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 143 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Brunswick County. WPGI is an oldies radio station licensed to Georgetown, South Carolina, and serving the Grand Strand area. The Andrulonis Media outlet, an affiliate of the "Carolina Country" network, is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission to broadcast at 93.7 MHz with an ERP of 6 kW. History WSCA-FM signed on at 93.7 in Georgetown playing classic rock but later joined with WJXY-FM, changing its letters to WXJY. As WJXY's simulcast partner, WXJY was "Cruisin' Country", with a mix of country and rock music, then rhythmic as "Hot 93". Owned by Morris Multimedia, the station has studios on Magnolia Village Way in Leland, and its transmitter is located west of Winnabow in Town Creek Township. Whiteville is a city in Columbus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,394 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Columbus County and is the county seat. Topsail Beach is a town in Pender County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 383 at the 2012 census. It is part of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Local folklore claims the name, Topsail (pronounced Tops’l), originated during the 1700s when pirate ships, including Blackbeard, roamed the coastal waters. Historians explain that marauding pirates hid their ships in the channel behind the island and waited for passing merchant ships loaded with goods. The pirates would pursue and attack the merchants, claiming the cargoes as their own. Eventually the merchants became aware of this infamous hiding place and began to watch for the tops of the pirates' sails showing over the rolling dunes - hence the name Topsail Island.
