Villanova Wildcats Baseball
The Villanova Wildcats baseball team is the varsity intercollegiate baseball program of Villanova University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The program's first season was in 1866, and it has been a member of the NCAA Division I Big East Conference since the start of the 1980 season. Its home venue is Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth, located on Villanova's campus. Kevin Mulvey is the team's head coach starting in the 2017 season. The program has appeared in 2 NCAA Tournaments at the Division I level. History Early history The program's first season of play was 1866. Mark Jackson (athletic Director)
Mark Jackson (born September 14, 1972) is the athletic director for Villanova University. Previously, Jackson was the senior associate athletic director for the University of Southern California. Education Jackson graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, Massachusetts. He then received a bachelor's degree in Government from Colby College where played defensive back on the football team from 1991 to 1994 . Jackson also received a master's degree in Public Policy from Trinity College (Connecticut) in 1997. Coaching career Jackson began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Trinity College (Connecticut) from 1995 to 1996. Jackson joined the New England Patriots' coaching staff as a special teams coaching assistant under then-Patriots head coach Pete Carroll in 1998. Kevin Mulvey
Kevin John Mulvey (born May 26, 1985) is an American former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher who played for the Minnesota Twins and Arizona Diamondbacks in 2009 and 2010, and is the current head baseball coach at Villanova University. Early life Mulvey is a New Jersey native. He graduated from Bishop George Ahr High School in Edison, New Jersey. Mulvey attended Villanova University, and in 2004 and 2005, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League. While at Villanova, he tossed a no-hitter against Connecticut on March 26, . Big East Conference
The Big East Conference is a collegiate athletic conference that competes in NCAA Division I in ten men's sports and twelve women's sports. Headquartered in New York City, the eleven full-member schools are primarily located in Northeast and Midwest metropolitan areas. The conference was officially recognized as a Division I multi-sport conference on August 1, 2013, and since then conference members have won NCAA national championships in men's basketball, women's cross country, field hockey, men's lacrosse, and men's soccer. The Villanova Wildcats are the athletic teams of Villanova University. They compete in the Big East (NCAA Division I) for every sport; except football and rowing where they compete in the Colonial Athletic Association (Football Championship Subdivision, formerly Division I-AA). On December 15, 2012, Villanova and the other six, non-FBS schools announced that they were departing the Big East for a new conference. This conference assumed the Big East name on July 1, 2013. NCAA Division I Baseball Championship
The NCAA Division I Baseball Championship is held each year from May through June and features 64 college baseball teams in the United States, culminating in the eight-team Men's College World Series at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska. Tournament format The tournament is unique in that it features four tiers of competition, alternating between double-elimination brackets and best-of-three series. In fact, throughout the entire 64-team tournament, a team can lose a total of four games and still be crowned champions. During team selection, sixteen teams are given "national seeds". The top eight of these teams automatically host a super regional if they advance past the regional round, assuming that they have the facilities to do so. Art Mahan
Arthur Leo Mahan (June 8, 1913 – December 7, 2010) was a professional baseball player, who played as a first baseman in the major leagues for the Philadelphia Phillies during the season. Born in Somerville, Massachusetts, he batted and threw left-handed. Mahan played in the Boston Red Sox organization from 1936 until he was sold to the Phillies in April 1940. He played one season for the Phillies, and posted a .244 batting average (133-for-544) with two home runs and 39 RBI in 146 games played, including 55 runs, 24 doubles and five triples. He hit a double off the wall his first time at bat and led the Phillies in stolen bases. During World War II, Mahan served as a training officer in the United States Navy, working in training cadets.
