Victory Island
Victory Island is a small island off the coast of Samar, Philippines, situated in Leyte Gulf. It is locally administered by the barangay with the same name and is controlled by the municipality of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. According to the 2020 census, Victory Island has an estimated population of 598. The island is home to a small catholic church and an elementary school. Due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Victory Island is exposed and vulnerable to typhoons. On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in Guiuan, devastating the island and destroying houses and fishing boats, uprooting trees, killing at least one person and leaving fifteen people missing. The island is situated 5.3 km (3.3 mi) to the west of Tubabao Island and 4.4 km (2.8 mi) north of Manicani Island. Manicani Island
Manicani is a small island in the Leyte Gulf, Philippines. The local governing body is the municipality of Guiuan of Eastern Samar province. Its 3,000 residents live in four barangays: San Jose, Banaag, Hamorawon and Buenavista. Housing and construction is mostly simple timber or concrete huts without power or plumbing. History Second World War During World War II, the US Navy transformed Manicani into a major naval repair facility, Leyte-Samar Naval Base. It was built to carry out maintenance and repairs to any of the ships in the fleet. The facility included housing for 10,000 people, a mess hall, shops, administration buildings, and an outdoor movie theater. In addition, the USS Artisan (AFDB-1) and USS ABSD-5 were brought to Manicani. Upon leaving Manicani, all buildings and utilities were dismantled and removed by US Navy personnel. Tubabao
Tubabao is an island off the southeastern point of Samar Island. It is one of the islands comprising the town of Guiuan in the province of Eastern Samar, in east central Philippines. The island is located close to the town centre. During World War II the island was part of a large US Navy base Leyte-Samar Naval Base. Refugees from Russia Tubabao was used by the International Refugee Organization (IRO) in 1949 and 1950 to provide a temporary refuge for 5,000 Russian refugees escaping from China. The Russians were survivors of the October Revolution and Russian Civil War, when the Russian monarchy was overthrown by the Bolsheviks. Some Russians managed to escape and took refuge in foreign lands. Typhoon Haiyan
Typhoon Haiyan, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Yolanda, was one of the most powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded. On making landfall, Haiyan devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines. It is one of the deadliest Philippine typhoons on record, killing at least 6,300 people in that country alone. In terms of JTWC-estimated 1-minute sustained winds, Haiyan is tied with Meranti in 2016 for being the second strongest landfalling tropical cyclone on record, only behind Goni of 2020. A typhoon is a mature tropical cyclone that develops between 180° and 100°E in the Northern Hemisphere. 2020 Philippine Census
The 2020 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) is the fifteenth census in the Philippines and is the second census conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority. Pilot run The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) conducted a pilot run of the census from May 20 to June 17, 2019 covering eight areas. A new computer-aided system was tested, with PSA personnel to use an electronic questionnaire through digital tablets. Postponement The census was originally scheduled to start on May 4, 2020. The conduct of the census was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The census was planned to be held sometime after the lifting of the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon which was imposed as a response to the health crisis. Leyte Gulf
Leyte Gulf is a gulf in the Eastern Visayan region in the Philippines. The bay is part of the Philippine Sea of the Pacific Ocean, and is bounded by two islands; Samar in the north and Leyte in the west. On the south of the bay is Mindanao Island, separated from Leyte by the Surigao Strait. Samar ( ) is the third-largest and seventh-most populous island in the Philippines, with a total population of 1,909,537 as of the 2020 census.
