Victorian Maritime Centre
The Victorian Maritime Centre is an Australian maritime museum near Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is currently located at the former BP administration building at Crib Point, Victoria. There are plans to establish a larger maritime centre in Hastings, Victoria. The new site would feature HMAS Otama, an Oberon-class submarine operated by the Royal Australian Navy from 1978 to 2000. The Otama was moored offshore at Crib Point since 2002. She has now arrived in Western Australia for scrapping. The ship Wyuna is also planned to be displayed at the centre. Melbourne ( ; Boonwurrung/Woiwurrung: ''Narrm'' or ''Naarm'') is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second-most populous city in both Australia and Oceania. Crib Point is a town on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Mornington Peninsula local government area. HMAS Otama
HMAS ''Otama'' (SS 62/SSG 62) is an , formerly of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Built in Scotland, the submarine was the last of the class to enter service when commissioned into the RAN in 1978. ''Otama'' was a specialist, one of two "Mystery Boats", fitted with additional surveillance and intelligence-gathering equipment. ''Otama'' was routinely deployed on classified operations to obtain intelligence on Soviet Pacific Fleet vessels and Chinese Navy vessels, and conducted associated coastal surveillance, throughout Asia. The submarine was part of the RAN's largest flag-showing cruise in the Indian Ocean during 1980. From 1983 to 1985, she underwent an extensive upgrade. Oberon-class Submarine
The ''Oberon'' class was a ship class of 27 British-designed submarines operated by five different nations. They were designed as a direct follow-on from the ''Porpoise'' class: physical dimensions were the same, but stronger materials were used in hull construction, and updated equipment was fitted. The submarines were built between 1957 and 1978 by four shipyards: Cammell Laird (4), Chatham Dockyard (6), Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company (11) and Vickers-Armstrongs (6). Wyuna
''Wyuna'' is a former Port Phillip Pilot tender and Australian Maritime College training vessel. History The ship was built in 1953 by Ferguson Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow, Scotland for the Port Phillip Sea Pilots organisation as a pilot cutter. She is propelled by a diesel-electric power plant consisting of diesel generators powering electric motors coupled to the propeller shafts. Consequently, she may use the ship prefix "de" and be referred to as de ''Wyuna''. Her role as a pilot cutter was to sail with pilots on board to meet ships entering Port Phillip Bay. Pilots would be transferred by the ''Wyunas workboat to the vessel requiring pilotage while it was stopped dead in the water, with shelter provided by the vessel itself. Beauty Point is a town by the Tamar River, in the north-east of Tasmania, Australia. It lies 45 km north of Launceston, on the West Tamar Highway and at the 2016 census, had a population of 1,222. Docklands, also known as Melbourne Docklands, is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, west of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Melbourne local government area.
