Valentijn Bing
Valentijn Bing (22 April 1812, Amsterdam - 28 January 1895, Nieuwpoort) was a Dutch painter, illustrator, and lithographer. His works included genre scenes, religious art, portraits, and cityscapes. Life and work He was the son of Andreas Christoph Bing, a merchant, and his English wife, Mary Ann née Barton. After completing secondary school, he studied at the , where his primary instructor was Jan Adam Kruseman. He made his entry into the art world by participating in the Exhibition of Living Masters. In 1839, he became a member of Arti et Amicitiae. From 1843, he was a teacher at the Akademie. For his 25th anniversary, in 1868, he was awarded a silver medal by , Director of the Akademie's engraving school. His most familiar students include Jacques Carabain, , Jan Portielje, and Marie Wandscheer. Bleskensgraaf
Bleskensgraaf is a town in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Molenlanden, and lies about 10 km northeast of Dordrecht. It has an area of 1272 hectares. On 1 January 2009 Bleskensgraaf and Hofwegen had 2797 inhabitants in 936 residences. Until 1855, Bleskensgraaf was a separate municipality. In 1855 the heerlijkheid or seigniory Bleskensgraaf and the heerlijkheid or seigniory 'Hofwegen' merged into one municipality named 'Bleskensgraaf and Hofwegen'. In 1986 it became the new municipality Graafstroom together with 6 adjacent towns. The town hall of Graafstroom was located in Bleskensgraaf. From 2013 Graafstroom was part of Molenwaard, till 2019 when it merged into Molenlanden. The town got its name because of the landlord (count) "Willem van Blassekijn". Jan Frederik Pieter Portielje (20 April 1829, Amsterdam – 6 February 1908, Antwerp) was a Dutch-Belgian painter of Genre art, genre scenes and portraits; mostly of women. Biography He was the tenth of eleven children born to Gerrit Portielje, a bookseller, and his wife, Jacoba Zeegers. From 1842 to 1849, he studied at the with Valentijn Bing and . He made several extended stays in Paris from 1851 to 1853 and worked as a portraitist, with a large clientele in both Brussels and Antwerp, where he eventually settled. In 1853, he married Eulalie Lemaire (1828–1903), and they had five children; two of whom, Gerard Portielje, Gerard and Edward Portielje, Edward, also became painters. Jacques Carabain
Jacques François Joseph Carabain, or Jacob Frans Jozef Carabain (23 February 1834, Amsterdam – 2 January 1933, Schaerbeek) was a Dutch-Belgian painter, known primarily for his scenes of cities and buildings in the Romantic-Realist style. He was especially interested in Medieval and Baroque structures, and was often attracted to busy market places. Biography He began his studies at the Amsterdamer Kunstakademie, where he initially painted landscapes and seascapes as well as cityscapes. His teachers there included Jacobus Schoemaker Doyer and Valentijn Bing. His first major showing was at the Exhibition of Living Masters in 1852.
