August Allebé
August Allebé (19 April 1838 – 10 January 1927) was an artist and teacher from the Northern Netherlands. His early paintings were in a romanticism, romantic style, but in his later work he was an exponent of realism (arts), realism and impressionism. He was a major initiator and promoter of Amsterdam Impressionism, the artist's association St. Lucas, and the movement of the Amsterdamse Joffers. Amsterdam Impressionism – sometimes referred to by art historians as the School of Allebé – was the counterflow to the very strong Hague School in the movement of Dutch Impressionism. As a professor at the Royal Academy of Amsterdam (Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten) he fostered a cosmopolitan attitude toward art and the promotion and motivation of his students, and provided a significant stimulus to developments in modern art. Charles Rochussen
Charles Rochussen ( Kralingen, 1 August 1814 – Rotterdam 22 September 1894) was a 19th-century painter from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, who was also known as an illustrator and printmaker. Charles was the second son of the wealthy businessman and art collector Hendrik Rochussen (1779–1852), who was himself an amateur draftsman of some distinction and owned an extensive art and history library. His brother Henri Rochussen (1812–89) became a painter. While still a child, Charles showed a talent for drawing; between 1831 and 1834 he produced watercolor studies of birds. However, it was decided that he would pursue a career in business. He worked for a few years in an office before resolving at the age of 22 to turn to painting. Johan Coenraad Braakensiek
Johan Coenraad Braakensiek (24 May 1858 – 27 February 1940) was a Dutch painter, illustrator and political cartoonist. He is the grandfather of Jan van Oort. Personal life Braakensiek was born in Amsterdam, the son of Albert Braakensiek, an illustrator and lithographer, and Wilhelmina Charlotta Elizabeth Anna Moolenizjer. He left school at age 11 and took a job in a fashion shop as a designer/embroider. He attended art classes by JB Tetar at the same time, at which his personal drawings were noticed by art critic Martin Klaff who recommended he take the entrance exam to the State Academy of Fine Arts, in Amsterdam from which he eventually graduated in 1881. Tjeerd Bottema
Tjeerd (Tsjeard) Bottema (6 February 1884 in Langezwaag – 8 March 1978 in Katwijk) was a Dutch painter, illustrator and book cover designer. Biography Bottema was a student at Kunstnijverheidsschool Quellinus and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. He was a student of August Allebé, Antoon Derkinderen, George Sturm and Nicolaas van der Waay. Winning the Dutch Prix de Rome in 1907 allowed him to make several trips to art including Italy, Spain, Morocco, France England and Belgium. After graduation he worked from 1911 to 1919 in Laren. Then he settled in Katwijk aan Zee, where he lived until his death in 1978. Bottema was also a commercial artist and illustrator. As an illustrator he made the drawings for the novels of the Dutch Protestant writers Anne de Vries and W.G. van der Hulst, but he also made drawings for the socialist satiric magazine ''De Ware Jacob''. Johanna Bauer-Stumpff
Jo Bauer-Stumpff (5 September 1873 – 19 December 1964) was a Dutch people, Dutch painter. Bauer-Stumpff was born in Amsterdam and trained at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten there, where she studied under August Allebé.Jo Bauer in the RKD Her father William Stumpff was director-general at the Royal Dutch theatre. She was a member of Arti et Amicitiae (where she won a medal in 1952) and the ''Hollandse Aquarellisten Kring'' and is considered one of the Amsterdamse Joffers. Syvert Nicolaas Bastert (7 January 1854 – 18 April 1939), was a 19th-century Dutch landscape painter, best known for his scenes along the river Vecht. Floris Arntzenius
Pieter Florentius Nicolaas Jacobus Arntzenius (9 June 1864 – 16 February 1925) was a Dutch painter, water-colourist, illustrator and printmaker. He is considered a representative of the younger generation of the Hague School. Arntzenius was born in Surabaya on the island of Java where his father served in the Royal Dutch East Indies Army. In 1875, at the age of 11, he was sent to the Netherlands to Amsterdam to live with his aunt and uncle in order to complete his education. In 1882 he became a student of Frederik Nachtweh, under Nachtweh's supervision he gained admission to the ''Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten''. Lizzy Ansingh
Maria Elisabeth Georgina Ansingh (13 March 1875 – 14 December 1959) was a Dutch painter. Ansingh belonged to a group of female post-impressionist painters influenced by the Amsterdam Impressionism movement called the ''Amsterdamse Joffers''. Zorgvlied (cemetery)
Zorgvlied is a cemetery on the Amsteldijk in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on the left bank of the river Amstel. The cemetery was opened in 1870 by the city of Amstelveen which still owns and operates it, though since 1896 (when city lines were redrawn) it is located within the boundaries of the city of Amsterdam. One of the country's best-known cemeteries, it is notable for the large number of celebrities, especially from the literary and theater worlds, buried there. History The cemetery takes its name from the villa on whose grounds it is built. The design, by Jan David Zocher, is in the English garden style.
