Jan Portielje
Jan Frederik Pieter Portielje (20 April 1829, Amsterdam – 6 February 1908, Antwerp) was a Dutch-Belgian painter of Genre art, genre scenes and portraits; mostly of women. Biography He was the tenth of eleven children born to Gerrit Portielje, a bookseller, and his wife, Jacoba Zeegers. From 1842 to 1849, he studied at the with Valentijn Bing and . He made several extended stays in Paris from 1851 to 1853 and worked as a portraitist, with a large clientele in both Brussels and Antwerp, where he eventually settled. In 1853, he married Eulalie Lemaire (1828–1903), and they had five children; two of whom, Gerard Portielje, Gerard and Edward Portielje, Edward, also became painters. His genre pictures featured elegant women in gardens or luxurious interiors. Some were dressed in Orientalism, Orientalist style. Alfred East
Sir Alfred Edward East (15 December 1844 – 28 September 1913) was an English painter. Life East was born in Kettering in Northamptonshire and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. His romantic landscapes show the influence of the Barbizon school. His ''The Art of Landscape Painting in Oil Colour'' was published in 1906. In April 1888 he had shared an exhibition at the galleries of the Fine Art Society with T.C. Gotch and W. Ayerst Ingram, and was commissioned the following year by Marcus Huish, managing director of the Society, to spend six months in Japan to paint the landscape and the people of the country. When the exhibition of 104 paintings from this tour was held at the Fine Art Society in 1890 it was a spectacular success. Bendigo Art Gallery is an Australian art gallery located in Bendigo, Victoria. It is one of the oldest and largest regional art galleries. History The gallery was founded in 1887. The gallery's collection was first housed in the former Bendigo Volunteer Rifle's room, converted into an exhibition space by Bendigo architect William Charles Vahland (1828–1915) in 1890 and renamed Bolton Court.
