VVV-Venlo (, ''VVV'' stands for ''Venlose Voetbal Vereniging'' meaning "Venlo Football Club") is a Dutch football club from Venlo, a city on the border with Germany. They play in the Eerste Divisie, the second tier of Dutch football, following relegation from the Eredivisie in the 2020–21 season. The club plays its home games in the Covebo Stadion – De Koel stadium, which is named after one of the club's sponsors Covebo Uitzendgroep. VVV's home colors are yellow and black. History Foundation and first decades (1903–1952) VVV originated from the association football club ''De Gouden Leeuw'', which was founded by a group of friends in Venlo at the end of the nineteenth century. A few more name changes would occur, and the team was also known as ''Valuas'' for some time. De Koel
De Koel (), also known as Covebo Stadion – De Koel, is a multi-purpose stadium in Venlo, Limburg (Netherlands), Limburg, Netherlands. It is currently mostly used for association football, football matches and is the home stadium of VVV-Venlo. The stadium is able to hold 8,000 spectators, and was built in 1972. Background The stadium is located near the former Stadium De Kraal in a pit ("koel" is Venlo dialect, Venlo Limburgish for "pit") on Kaldenkerkerweg, on top of the steep fringe in the east of Venlo. The stadium was once able to accommodate 24,500 spectators during a match between VVV and AFC Ajax, Ajax in 1977. When Dutch competitive football experienced a dip in public interest in the late 1980s, De Koel managed to keep their spectator numbers up to standard. 2008–09 Eerste Divisie
Eerste Divisie 2008–09 began in August 2008 and concluded in May 2009, with the promotion playoffs. Sixteen clubs remained in the Eerste Divisie, whilst Excelsior and VVV-Venlo were relegated from the 2007–08 Eredivisie. VVV-Venlo won the league title and were promoted to the Eredivisie, the highest tier of football in the Netherlands, while eight other teams competed in a playoff with two Eredivisie sides for two Eredivisie places. Standings Period winners The competition is divided into six periods ( nl, periode) of six matches each. The winner of each period ( nl, periodekampioen) qualifies for the playoffs at the end of the season. If the winner of a period has already won a prior period in the season, the second placed team in the period is awarded the playoff slot. If the second placed team has also won a prior period, no winner is called, and the playoff slot is decided by league standing at the end of the season. Ahmed Musa (born 14 October 1992) is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a forward and left winger for Turkish Süper Lig club Sivasspor and the Nigeria national team. Musa became the first Nigerian to score more than once in a FIFA World Cup match, after scoring twice against Argentina in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Ruud Boymans (born 28 April 1989) is a Dutch former professional footballer. He played for Fortuna Sittard, VVV-Venlo, AZ, Willem II, FC Utrecht, Al Shabab and Almere City FC. Club career Ruud Boymans was born in Born, Netherlands. He made his debut in professional football on 7 December 2007, playing for Fortuna Sittard against RBC Roosendaal in a match that ended 0–0.
