Usserød Å
Usserød Å, the principal drainage of Sjælsø, Sjælsø Lake. is a stream in North Zealand to the north of Copenhagen, Denmark. It is approximately 9 kilometres long, drops 18 metres and is joined by Donse Å before itself flowing into Nive Å on its way to the Øresund at Nivå. It passes through the protected Usserød Ådal and the town of Hørsholm. Several watermills and early industrial sites are located along its course, the largest being Usserød Textile Factory, Usserød Textile Mill. Course Usserød Å extends from the south side of Sjælsø, Sjælsø Lake. Its first part is heavily regulated and runs through the outskirts of Birkerød, Eskemose Skov and the Istedrød area. It then passes under the Helsingørmotorvejen, Helsingør Motorway and continues through the protected Usserød Ådal(Usserød Valley) at Mortenstrup before entering a suburban neighbourhood just north of Kokkedal station. A mill pond (or millpond) is a body of water used as a reservoir for a water-powered mill. Description Mill ponds were often created through the construction of a mill dam or weir (and mill stream) across a waterway. In many places, the common proper name Mill Pond has remained even though the mill has long since gone. It may be fed by a man-made stream, known by several terms including leat and'' mill stream.'' Kokkedal Station
Kokkedal Station is a railway station serving the suburb of Kokkedal on the east coast of North Zealand, north of central Copenhagen. The station is located on the coast between Helsingør and Copenhagen. The train services are currently operated by the railway company DSB Øresund which runs a frequent Oresundtrain service between Helsingør and Copenhagen with some services continuing on to Malmö and other destinations in southern Sweden. Birkerød
Birkerød () is a town in Rudersdal Municipality in the northern outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark. It is surrounded by several lakes and small woodlands. Birkerød station is located on the Hillerød radial of the S-train suburban network. History The parish of Birkerød contained the villages Birkerød, Kajerød, Bistrup, Ravnsnæs, Isterød, Høsterkøb, Sandbjerg and Ubberød. Birkerød became a railway town in 1868, when the Nordbanen railway opened a station here between Lyngby and Helsingør. Usserød Textile Factory
Usserød Textile Factory (Danish: Usserød Klædefabrik) is a listed, 19th-century industrial complex at Usserød Å in the Usserød district of Hørsholm, Denmark. It was from 1802 home to the Royal Military Textile Factory (Danish: Den Kongelige Militære Klædefabrik) which remained in use until 1981. The buildings have now been renovated and are now used as a business park. History The first textile mill at the site was established by a private consortium in 1791. They had previously unsuccessfully applied for a royal license to build a textile mill on Mølleåen. In 1802 it was taken over by the state and from 1809 used for manufacturing textiles for military uniforms. From 1815, it completely replaced the Royal Military Textile Manufactury on Rigensgade in Copenhagen which was converted into a new garrison hospital. Hørsholm
Hørsholm () is an urban area on the Øresund coast approximately north of Copenhagen, Denmark. It covers most of Hørsholm Municipality and straddles the borders neighbouring Fredensborg Municipality and Rudersdal Municipality. Hørsholm proper is developed around Hirschholm Palace, which was constructed in the 1730s, but the town has later absorbed several of the nearby communities that are of much older origins.
