USS ''Saugus'' (AN-4/AP-109/LSV-4/MCS-4) was an built for the United States Navy during World War II. Named after , which was in turn named for Saugus, Massachusetts, she was the second of three U.S. Naval vessels to bear the name. Laid down on 27 July 1942 by the Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation of Pascagoula, Mississippi as netlayer ''AN-4''; reclassified ''AP-109'' on 1 May 1943; launched on 4 September 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Rivers J. Carstarphen; reclassified ''LSV-4'' on 21 April 1944; completed by the Tampa Shipbuilding Company of Tampa, Florida; and commissioned on 22 February 1945. Service history After shakedown, ''Saugus'' loaded cargo at New Orleans and sailed on 30 March 1945 for Hawaii. Balboa is a district of Panama City, located at the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. History The town of Balboa, founded by the United States during the construction of the Panama Canal, was named after Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the Spanish conquistador credited with discovering the Pacific Ocean. The name was suggested to the Canal Zone authorities by the Peruvian ambassador to Panama. Suisun Bay, California
Suisun Bay ( ; Wintun for "where the west wind blows") is a shallow tidal estuary (a northeastern extension of the San Francisco Bay) in Northern California. It lies at the confluence of the Sacramento River and San Joaquin River, forming the entrance to the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta, an inverted river delta. To the west, Suisun Bay is drained by the Carquinez Strait, which connects to San Pablo Bay, a northern extension of San Francisco Bay. Suisun Marsh, the tidal marsh land to the north, is the largest marsh in California. Grizzly Bay forms a northern extension of Suisun Bay. Suisun Bay is directly north of Contra Costa County. Operation Magic Carpet was the post- World War II operation by the War Shipping Administration to repatriate over eight million American military personnel from the European, Pacific, and Asian theaters. Hundreds of Liberty ships, Victory ships, and troop transports began repatriating soldiers from Europe in June 1945. Beginning in October 1945, over 370 navy ships were used for repatriation duties in the Pacific. Warships, such as aircraft carriers, battleships, hospital ships, and large numbers of assault transports were used.
