USS R-7 (SS-84)
USS ''R-7'' (SS-84) was an ''R''-class coastal and harbor defense submarine of the United States Navy. Construction and commissioning ''R-7''′s keel was laid down on 6 December 1917 by the Fore River Shipbuilding Company in Quincy, Massachusetts. She was launched on 5 April 1919, sponsored by Mrs. Ivan E. Bass, and commissioned on 12 June 1919. Service history 1919–1931 Completed and fitted out at Boston, Massachusetts, during the summer and early fall of 1919, ''R-7'' got underway for New London, Connecticut, and duty with SubDiv 9 on 21 October. Through November she conducted training exercises off the Connecticut coast. In December she headed south for Norfolk, Virginia, and winter exercises in the Gulf of Mexico. Into April 1920, she operated out of Pensacola, Florida, before returning to New England in May. Ceremonial ship launching involves the performance of ceremonies associated with the process of transferring a vessel to the water. It is a nautical tradition in many cultures, dating back thousands of years, to accompany the physical process with ceremonies which have been observed as public celebration and a solemn blessing, usually but not always, in association with the launch itself. Pearl Harbor is an American lagoon harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu. The Norfolk Naval Shipyard, often called the Norfolk Navy Yard and abbreviated as NNSY, is a U.S. Navy facility in Portsmouth, Virginia, for building, remodeling and repairing the Navy's ships. The United States Navy, United States Coast Guard, and United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) use a hull classification symbol (sometimes called hull code or hull number) to identify their ships by type and by individual ship within a type.
