USS Maumee (AO-2)
The second USS ''Maumee'' (AO-2) was laid down as ''Fuel Ship No. 14'' on 23 July 1914 by Navy Shipyard, Mare Island, Calif.; launched 17 April 1915; sponsored by Miss Janet Crose; and commissioned 20 October 1916. When the Navy's ship classifications were introduced 17 July 1920, ''Maumee'' was designated AO-2. Design ''Maumee'' was the first surface ship in the U.S. Navy to be powered by diesel engines. Supervising their installation and operation was her Executive and Chief Engineering Officer, Lt. Chester W. Nimitz. To be fitted with the engines after it was built, the ship was towed all the way from Union Iron Works in San Francisco to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. USS Maumee (ID-1339)
USS ''Maumee'' (ID-1339) was a United States Navy Collier (ship type), collier commissioned in 1918. The ship was built in 1897 by Furness Withy and Company, Ltd. at West Hartlepool, England as the cargo ship ''Maylands'' of J. F. Wilson & Company. The ship went through a progression of names and owners, becoming ''Veerhaven'' in 1905, and ''Djursland'' in 1915. Later in 1915, the ship was renamed ''Maumee'' after her purchase by the American Transatlantic Company. After the United States' entry into World War I, ''Maumee'' was acquired by the United States Navy on 9 January 1918 and commissioned (ship), commissioned the same day. ''Maumee'' was initially assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, but reassigned to the Destroyer Force on 18 April 1919. American Expeditionary Force
The American Expeditionary Forces (A. E. F.) was a formation of the United States Army on the Western Front of World War I. The A. E. F. was established on July 5, 1917, in France under the command of General John J. Pershing. It fought alongside French Army, British Army, Canadian Army, New Zealand Army and Australian Army units against the Imperial German Army. A small number of A. E. F. troops also fought alongside Italian Army units in that same year against the Austro-Hungarian Army. The A. E. F. helped the French Army on the Western Front during the Aisne Offensive (at the Battle of Château-Thierry and Battle of Belleau Wood) in the summer of 1918, and fought its major actions in the Battle of Saint-Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in the latter part of 1918. Naval Station Argentia is a former base of the United States Navy that operated from 1941 to 1994. It was established in the community of Argentia in what was then the Dominion of Newfoundland, which later became the tenth Canadian province, Newfoundland and Labrador.
