Turkmenabat Airport
Turkmenabat International Airport ( tk, ), is an international airport in Türkmenabat, Turkmenistan. It is located approximately 13 km from the center of the city. History The original airport was opened in 1926 and was repeatedly reconstructed. Radical reconstruction took place during the years of independence of Turkmenistan. The former airport was equipped with a modern air navigation system along with a platform for automated fueling. The runway was also extended. New airport In 2013 construction started on a new airport complex south of downtown Turkmenabat. The ceremony of laying the first stone on 14 February 2013 was attended by President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. Final construction was carried out by the Turkmen private construction firm Gündogdy, a member of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan. Türkmenabat ( tk, Türkmenabat, Түркменабат), formerly and since medieval times Chardzhou, (russian: Чарджоу, ''Chardzhou''; tk, Çärjew, links=no, ) ( fa, چهارجوی 'čahârjuy', meaning 'four brooks') and in ancient times Āmul, is the second-largest city in Turkmenistan and the capital of Lebap Province. , it had a population of approximately 254,000 people (up from 161,000 in the 1989 census). From 1924 to 1927 it was briefly renamed Leninsk in honor of Vladimir Lenin. Etymology The former name of the city, Çärjew (also Chardzhou), is a Turkmen borrowing from the Persian ''čahârjuy'', which consists of two parts: ''čahâr'', meaning "four", and ''juy'', meaning "brook". This type of naming is also common in Iran, such as the village Se Juy (literally 'three brooks'). Ashgabat International Airport ( tk, Aşgabat halkara howa menzili) , formerly known as Saparmyrat Türkmenbaşy International Airport, is one of five international airports in Turkmenistan. It is located within the city limits of Ashgabat (Ashkhabad). The old airport, with its air traffic control tower and a precision approach runway (12L-30R), opened in 1994 and was named after the country's first president, Saparmyrat Niyazov. The new airport terminal opened in September 2016, after being completely redesigned and rebuilt and after the south runway was moved and lengthened to parallel the north runway.
