Troed-y-rhiw (, translation: foot of the slope) is a large community village in the county borough of Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. Its population at the 2011 census was 5,296. It features the Troed-y-rhiw railway station. Governance The community shares a border with the electoral ward of Plymouth, which elects three county councillors to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. At the May 2017 elections the ward re-elected three Labour Party councillors. Community Archives Wales In 2007 the Troedyrhiw Environment Forum joined the Community Archives Wales programme. The Environment Forum is a part of the Troedyrhiw Community Partnership which has approximately 30 registered members who attend all kinds of different forums including a Residents Association, Scouts Group and Old Age Persons Group. Troed-y-rhiw Railway Station
Troed-y-rhiw railway station is a railway station serving the village of Troed-y-rhiw in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. It is located on the Merthyr branch of the Merthyr Line. Passenger services are provided by Transport for Wales. History The station was first opened by the Taff Vale Railway in late 1841 though it did not appear in Bradshaw's timetables until 1844. It was named Troedyrhiew from 1846/47 until 1 July 1924 when it became Troedyrhiw. The hyphens were added on 12 May 1980. George Lewis (footballer, Born 1913)
Thomas George Lewis (20 October 1913 – 6 August 1981) was a Welsh footballer who played as a centre-forward for Watford in the late 1930s, before joining Southampton for a brief period after World War II. Football career Watford Lewis was born in Troed-y-rhiw in Glamorgan and after playing youth football with his village side and then in the nearby town of New Tredegar followed his elder brother Jim to join Watford. He initially joined Watford as an amateur at 17, before signing his first professional contract in May 1934. Lewis stayed at Vicarage Road until the war, making irregular appearances in the Football League Third Division South, firstly, like his brother, at left back before moving to centre forward in 1937–38. His most successful league season was 1938–39 when he scored nine goals from 13 appearances. During the war he was an Army P.T. instructor, although he made guest appearances for Chester City. Bobby Weale
Robert Henry Weale (16 December 1905 – 8 December 1952) was a Welsh footballer who played as an outside right for various clubs in England and Wales in the 1920s and 1930s. Football career West Ham United Weale was born in Troed-y-rhiw in Glamorgan and after playing youth football for Merthyr Tydfil he was signed by West Ham United in March 1925. He made his first team debut on 10 October 1925, replacing Tommy Yews in a 1–0 victory over Notts County. He only made three First Division appearances for the "Hammers" in his two years with the club, before being transferred to Swindon Town in June 1927. Plymouth is the name of an electoral ward of Merthyr Tydfil, in Wales. It is coterminous with the community of Troed-y-rhiw. Description The Plymouth ward covers the community of Troed-y-rhiw and includes the villages of Troed-y-rhiw, Pentrebach and Abercanaid. It elects three councillors to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. At the May 2017 elections the three Labour Party councillors, Gareth Lewis (967), Brent Carter (884) and Harvey Jones (860), successfully defended their seats. Merthyr Tydfil County Borough ( cy, Bwrdeistref Sirol Merthyr Tudful) is a county borough (since 1908) in the south-east of Wales. In mid 2018, it had an estimated population of 60,183. Daniel James Lewis (21 June 1909 – 7 October 1980) was a Welsh professional footballer. He played as a full back in the English Football League for Watford from 1931 until 1939, when football was suspended due to the Second World War. Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council ( cy, Cyngor bwrdeistref Sirol Merthyr Tudful) is the governing body for Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. History The parish of Merthyr Tydfil was governed by a local board from 1850 until 1894, when it was replaced by an urban district council. The urban district was incorporated as a borough in 1905, creating the first Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council. In 1908 it became a county borough, making it independent from Glamorgan County Council. Charlie Jones (footballer Born 1899)
Charles Jones (12 December 1899 – April 1966) was a Welsh international footballer. Born in Troedyrhiw, Merthyr Tydfil, Jones started his career at Cardiff City, but was released in the summer of 1921 after just one appearance, a 1–0 defeat to Stoke City. He joined Stockport County, and in his first season at the club ( 1921–22) won a Third Division North medal and promotion to the Second Division. He moved in March 1923 to First Division Oldham Athletic, but the club were relegated to the Second Division soon after he joined; Jones spent another two seasons with the Latics in the second flight, and then joined fellow Second Division side Nottingham Forest in the summer of 1925. Jones steadily made a name for himself as a talented left winger with Forest, making over 100 appearances for them in three years. Willie Davies (footballer)
William Davies (10 March 1900 – 1953) was a Welsh professional footballer who made over 300 appearances in the Football League during spells with Swansea Town, Cardiff City, Notts County and Tottenham Hotspur. He also made 17 appearances for Wales, scoring six times. Early life Davies was born in Troedyrhiw to Thomas and Mary Davies, growing up in Harriet Town. Career Davies began his career playing for local amateur sides, joining Rhymney where he once scored 61 goals in a single season. He was signed by Swansea Town in 1921, playing in every forward position for the club before settling at outside-right. He made his Wales debut while playing for Swansea but, in 1924 with the club going through financial trouble, he moved to Cardiff City for a fee of £25.
