Troed-y-rhiw Railway Station
Troed-y-rhiw railway station is a railway station serving the village of Troed-y-rhiw in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. It is located on the Merthyr branch of the Merthyr Line. Passenger services are provided by Transport for Wales. History The station was first opened by the Taff Vale Railway in late 1841 though it did not appear in Bradshaw's timetables until 1844. It was named Troedyrhiew from 1846/47 until 1 July 1924 when it became Troedyrhiw. The hyphens were added on 12 May 1980. Troed-y-rhiw (, translation: foot of the slope) is a large community village in the county borough of Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. Its population at the 2011 census was 5,296. It features the Troed-y-rhiw railway station. Governance The community shares a border with the electoral ward of Plymouth, which elects three county councillors to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. At the May 2017 elections the ward re-elected three Labour Party councillors. Community Archives Wales In 2007 the Troedyrhiw Environment Forum joined the Community Archives Wales programme. The 2,520 railway stations on the National Rail network in Great Britain are classified into six categories (two of which are each divided into two subcategories) by the Department for Transport. Taff Vale Railway
The Taff Vale Railway (TVR) was a standard gauge railway in South Wales, built by the Taff Vale Railway Company to serve the iron and coal industries around Merthyr Tydfil and to connect them with docks in Cardiff. It was opened in stages in 1840 and 1841. In the railway's first years, the coal mining industries expanded considerably and branches were soon opened in the Rhondda valleys and the Cynon Valley. The conveyance of coal for export and for transport away from South Wales began to dominate and the docks in Cardiff and the approach railway became extremely congested. Alternatives were sought and competing railway companies were encouraged to enter the trade. Vale Of Glamorgan Line
The Vale of Glamorgan Line ( cy, Llinell Bro Morgannwg) is a commuter railway line in Wales, running through the Vale of Glamorgan from Barry to Bridgend, via Rhoose and Llantwit Major. Route The Barry branch starts at Cardiff West and runs to Barry Island with a single line branch from Cogan Junction to Penarth.
