Tor-na-Dee Hospital
Tor-Na-Dee Hospital was a health facility at Milltimber, Aberdeen, Scotland. History The hospital, which was established as part of an initiative by Dr Alexander Stewart to provide services to patients with rheumatism, opened as Deeside Hydropathic Hospital in November 1899. It became the Tor-Na-Dee Sanitorium (meaning ''Hill by the River Dee'') in 1918. An east wing was opened in 1920 and the hospital was acquired by the Red Cross in 1945. After joining the National Health Service in 1955, it became the Tor-Na-Dee Hospital in 1960. Further extensions included the Roxburghe House palliative care unit which opened in 1977 and a day care unit for cancer patients which opened in 1990. The hospital closed in 2002 and the building was subsequently converted into apartments as part of the Woodland Grove development. Milltimber
Milltimber is a suburb of Aberdeen, Scotland, around west of Aberdeen city centre. From 1854 to 1937 the area was served by Milltimber railway station on the Aberdeen suburban railway. Along with the nearby settlements of Cults and Bieldside, it is home to some of the wealthiest residents of Aberdeen. Facilities in Milltimber are somewhat lacking, with the nearest shop situated in neighbouring Bieldside. However, it is home to a highly rated primary school, a church, and a community building which is used for private functions as well as Boy Scout and Girl Guide troops and similar. Rheumatism
Rheumatism or rheumatic disorders are conditions causing chronic, often intermittent pain affecting the joints or connective tissue. Roxburghe House
Roxburghe House is a specialist palliative care unit which is situated near Foresterhill, Aberdeen, Scotland. It is managed by NHS Grampian. History Roxburghe House was established as a hospice and palliative care facility within the grounds of Tor-na-Dee Hospital site at Milltimber in Aberdeen in 1977. Princess Diana visited Roxburghe House in March 1985 and a day care unit was added in 1990. It moved to a purpose-built facility located to the east of the Foresterhill health campus in 2004. In September 2012 an extended garden area, which provides a peaceful and private area for patients and families, was unveiled. Cancer
Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. These contrast with benign tumors, which do not spread. Robert Young Keers
Robert Young Keers FRSE FRCPE FRCPSG (1908–1982) was a 20th-century Irish-born physician and medical author. He was an expert in tuberculosis and battled with the disease both personally and in his duties. Life He was born on 30 March 1908 in County Antrim the son of Rev William Keers (b.1869) and his wife Matilda Cameron. In 1911 the family were living in Drumbaragh, Killeevan near Monaghan. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh graduating with an MB in 1930. He represented the University in cross-country running events despite serious breathing difficulties, having contracted tuberculosis during his studies. His own experience drove him to study the disease in depth. He had various appointments in Edinburgh, Aberdeenshire and Midhurst before spending some years in Switzerland where there was international recognition of their sanatorium standards.
