Thuringian Holzland
The Thuringian Holzland (german: Thüringer Holzland) is an upland region in the state of Thuringia, Germany. Location The Thuringian Holzland lies within a triangle formed by the towns of Hermsdorf, Eisenberg and Stadtroda and between the rivers Saale, White Elster and Orlasenke. Originally it comprised the following 8 villages: Bad Klosterlausnitz, Hermsdorf, Oberndorf, Reichenbach, Schleifreisen, Sankt Gangloff, Tautenhain and Weißenborn. Description and history The reason for the extensive forests of this landscape is its rather infertile soils, which have been formed from the sandstones of the Bunter formation that make up the area. As a result, the Holzland is of limited use for agriculture. The rich timber industry of the area meant that once typical occupations, such as ladder maker (''Leitermacher''), blacksmith (''Peckschmied''), tubmaker (''Muldenhauer''), etc., were very common here. Bunter Sandstone
The Buntsandstein (German for ''coloured'' or ''colourful sandstone'') or Bunter sandstone is a lithostratigraphic and allostratigraphic unit (a sequence of rock strata) in the subsurface of large parts of west and central Europe. The Buntsandstein predominantly consists of sandstone layers of the Lower Triassic series and is one of three characteristic Triassic units, together with the Muschelkalk and Keuper that form the Germanic Trias Supergroup. The Buntsandstein is similar in age, facies and lithology with the Bunter of the British Isles. It is normally lying on top of the Permian Zechstein and below the Muschelkalk. In the past the name Buntsandstein was in Europe also used in a chronostratigraphic sense, as a subdivision of the Triassic system. Holzland is the name of a region in the western part of the Palatine Forest in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate Location and structure The Holzland is clearly bounded by surrounding streams: to the south and southeast by the Schwarzbach (Blies), Schwarzbach, and, to the west and north by its tributary, the Moosalb (Palatine Forest), Moosalb.
