Thomas Robertson (Ontario Politician)
Thomas Robertson (January 25, 1827 – September 6, 1905) was a lawyer and political figure in Ontario, Canada. He represented Hamilton in the House of Commons of Canada from 1878 to 1887 as a Liberal member. He was born in Ancaster, Upper Canada, the son of Alexander Robertson, a Scottish immigrant, and Mathilda Simons. Robertson was educated at the University of Toronto, studied law with John Hillyard Cameron and was called to the bar in 1852. He married Frances Louisa Reed in 1850. He served as the first Crown Attorney for Wentworth. Robertson ran unsuccessfully for the federal seat in Wentworth South in 1867. Hamilton was a federal electoral district (Canada), electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1904. It was located in the provinces and territories of Canada, province of Ontario and consisted of the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Hamilton. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867. Ancaster is a historic town in the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, located on the Niagara Escarpment. John Hillyard Cameron
John Hillyard Cameron, (April 14, 1817 – November 14, 1876) was an Ontario lawyer, businessman and political figure. He was a Conservative Member of Parliament representing Peel from 1867 to 1872 and Cardwell from 1872 until his death. He was born in Blendecques, France in 1817. His father was a soldier in the 79th Highlanders who served in France during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1825, he came with his family to Kingston in Upper Canada. He studied at Kilkenny College in Ireland and Upper Canada College. He then studied law with Henry John Boulton. During the Upper Canada Rebellion, he served with the Queen's Rangers. In 1839, he was called to the bar in Upper Canada and entered a law practice in Toronto, Ontario. In 1846, he became a Queen's Counsel. Wentworth County, Ontario
Wentworth County, area , is a historic county in the Canadian province of Ontario. It was created in 1816 as part of the Gore District (1816-1849) in what was then Upper Canada and later Canada West (1841-1867). It was named in honour of Sir John Wentworth, the last royal governor of colonial New Hampshire, lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia (1792 to 1808) and an intimate friend of William Jarvis, the first provincial secretary of Upper Canada. The county originally consisted of seven townships that formerly belonged to Haldimand, Lincoln and York Counties. Between 1850 and 1854, Wentworth County and Halton County were briefly joined for government purposes as the United Counties of Wentworth and Halton although for administrative purposes, they remained distinct.
