The Perianayagi Madha Shrine
Periyanayagi Madha shrine is a Roman Catholic church, dedicated to St. Mary, mother of Jesus constructed by an Italian missionary Fr. Constantine Beschi also known under his Tamil name of ''Vīramāmunivar''. It is in Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu, India. History Once Konankuppam was a forest place, where people from Mugasaparur the nearby village brought their flocks for grazing. During the 17th century an Italian missionary, Fr. Beshi, brought two statues of Mother Mary to consecrate at Elakurichi (Thirukavalur), where he worked. Passing through the forest on the way to Elakurichi he felt tired, and fell asleep under a tree. Children who were looking after their cattle nearby playfully hid one of the statues behind a bush. Fr. Beshi was upset to discover that a statue was missing and went on sadly. The Basilica of the Holy Redeemer, Tiruchirappalli is one of five Roman Catholic minor basilicas in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, India. History The origins of the basilica can be traced to the early decades of the 17th century, when Jesuit missionaries began spreading Christianity through the Madurai Mission. The first conversions occurred in the area known as Tiruchirappalli, also called "Trichy", in 1616. The missionaries eventually got support from the Hindu Naicker rulers of Madurai. The many Jesuit missionaries who worked in the Madurai Mission included Robert de Nobili and Constanzo Beschi. While Trichy was still a mission station of the Madurai Mission, several Christian communities were established in Palakkarai, Dharmanathapuram, and Varaganeri. Our Lady of Lourdes Basilica, also known as Poondi Madha Basilica, is a Catholic pilgrimage centre located in Tamil Nadu, South India.
