The Complete Wargames Handbook
''The Complete Wargames Handbook'' is a book about playing and designing wargames by James F. Dunnigan, published in 1980 by William Morrow and Company. Description While still in college in the 1960s, Jim Dunnigan became involved in wargaming, and subsequently designed ''Jutland'', which Avalon Hill published in 1967. This was the first of many wargames that Dunnigan designed, including ''1914'' (1968), ''PanzerBlitz'' (1970), and '' Sniper!'' (1973). Dunnigan also founded his own wargames company, initially known as Poultron Press, soon renamed Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI). In 1980, as wargame publishers turned to computer-based games, Dunnigan wrote ''The Complete Wargames Handbook'', a book about wargaming, including information about how to play, design, and find copies of wargames. Jim Dunnigan
James F. Dunnigan (born 8 August 1943) is an author, military-political analyst, Defense and State Department consultant, and Wargaming, wargame designer currently living in New York City. Career Dunnigan was born in Rockland County, New York. After high school, he volunteered for the military instead of waiting to be drafted. From 1961 to 1964, he worked as a repair technician for the MGM-29 Sergeant, Sergeant ballistic missile; his service included a tour in Korea. Afterwards, he attended Pace University studying accounting, then transferred to Columbia University, graduating with a degree in history in 1970. While still in college, he became involved in wargaming. He designed ''Jutland (board game), Jutland'', which Avalon Hill published in 1967, following it up with ''1914 (game), 1914'' the next year, and ''PanzerBlitz'' in 1970, which eventually sold more than 300,000 copies. Chaosium Inc. is a publisher of tabletop role-playing games established by Greg Stafford in 1975. Chaosium's major titles include '' Call of Cthulhu'', based on the horror fiction stories of H. P. Lynn Willis
Lynn Willis (died January 18, 2013) was a wargame and role-playing game designer, best known for his work with Metagaming Concepts, Game Designers' Workshop (GDW), and Chaosium. Biography Willis began by designing science fiction wargames for Metagaming Concepts, starting with ''Godsfire'' in 1976. He designed the MicroGames ''Olympica'' (1978) and ''Holy War'' (1979). Chaosium published '' Lords of the Middle Sea'' (1978), and Willis joined Chaosium in 1978. GDW published '' Bloodtree Rebellion'' (1979). Willis's relationship with Chaosium proved the most enduring; he would turn to role-playing games. He helped founder Greg Stafford trim and refine the ''RuneQuest'' rules into ''Basic Role-Playing'', the rules that would serve as the base for many of Chaosium's RPG lines. Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) was an American publisher of board wargames and related magazines, particularly its flagship '' Strategy & Tactics'', in the 1970s and early 1980s. It produced an enormous number of games and introduced innovative practices, changing the course of the wargaming hobby in its bid to take control of the hobby away from then-dominant Avalon Hill. SPI ran out of cash in early 1982 when TSR called in a loan secured by SPI's assets.
