Sven Alkalaj (cropped)
Sven Alkalaj (; born 11 November 1948) is a Bosnian diplomat who has served as Bosnia and Herzegovina ambassador to the United States since June 2023. He previously served as the Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations from 2019 to 2023. Alkalaj also served as the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2007 until 2012. He held the post of executive secretary of UNECE between 2012 and 2014 as well. Alkalaj served as the first Bosnia and Herzegovina ambassador to the United States from 1994 to 2000. He is one of the most prominent Bosnian Jews of Sephardic origin and has been a longtime member of the Party for Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Bosnian ambassador in Washington, D.C. is the official representative of the Bosnian government in Sarajevo to the government of the United States. The history of Jews in Bosnia and Herzegovina spans from the arrival of the first Bosnian Jews as a result of the Spanish Inquisition to the survival of the Bosnian Jews through the Holocaust and the Yugoslav Wars. Judaism and the Jewish community in Bosnia and Herzegovina has one of the oldest and most diverse histories in the former Yugoslav states, and is more than 500 years old, in terms of permanent settlement. Then a self-governing province of the Ottoman Empire, Bosnia was one of the few territories in Europe that welcomed Jews after their expulsion from Spain.
