Slana Concentration Camp
Slana concentration camp was a concentration and extermination camp on the Croatian island Pag. It was part of system of Ustaše concentration camps and killing pits, stretching from Gospić, across the Velebit mountains, to the island of Pag. The camp was established in June 1941 in Metajna. It was established by Mijo Babić and controlled by the Ustaše, who had been installed as rulers of the puppet state of Croatia by Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. Slana was a men's camp. Most prisoners were Jews, Serbs and Croatian communists. The commander of the camp was Ivan Devčević, who was also a commander of the 13th Ustaša battalion which was garrisoned in the camp. The camp was closed in August 1941 by the Italian military, who feared that the brutality of the Ustaše would provoke unrest in the region. Ante Zemljar (1922—2004) was Yugoslav military officer and writer from Dalmatia. Biography Zemljar was born in Pag 1922. He finished primary and secondary school in Pag and Šibenik. From 1941 on, was a member of the National Liberation Army as a resistance fighter, political activist and an officer. From 1949 to 1953 he went through torture on Goli Otok as a political prisoner. Zemljar had a degree in comparative literature from the University of Zagreb. In literature he proved himself as a poet, storyteller, travel writer, novelist, critic and a scriptwriter. He contributed to almost all relevant literary magazines, wrote radio comedies and film scripts, and published dozens of books. Extermination Camp
Nazi Germany used six extermination camps (german: Vernichtungslager), also called death camps (), or killing centers (), in Central Europe during World War II to systematically murder over 2.7 million peoplemostly Jewsin the Holocaust. The victims of death camps were primarily murdered by gassing, either in permanent installations constructed for this specific purpose, or by means of gas vans. The six extermination camps were Chełmno, Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka, Majdanek and Auschwitz-Birkenau. Velebit Mountains
Velebit (; it, Alpi Bebie) is the largest, though not the highest, mountain range in Croatia. The range forms a part of the Dinaric Alps and is located along the Adriatic coast, separating it from Lika in the interior. Velebit begins in the northwest near Senj with the Vratnik mountain pass and ends 145 km to the southeast near the source of the Zrmanja river northwest of Knin. Gospić
Gospić () is a town in the mountainous and sparsely populated region of Lika, Croatia. It is the administrative centre of Lika-Senj County. Gospić is located near the Lika River in the middle of a karst field ( Ličko Polje). Gospić is the third smallest seat of a county government in Croatia.
