Gospić
Gospić () is a town in the mountainous and sparsely populated region of Lika, Croatia. It is the administrative centre of Lika-Senj County. Gospić is located near the Lika River in the middle of a karst field ( Ličko Polje). Gospić is the third smallest seat of a county government in Croatia. Its status as the county capital helped to spur some development in it, but the town as well as the entire region have suffered a constant decrease in population over the last several decades. Scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla was born in the nearby village of Smiljan and grew up in Gospić. Lika
Lika () is a traditional region of Croatia proper, roughly bound by the Velebit mountain from the southwest and the Plješevica mountain from the northeast. On the north-west end Lika is bounded by Ogulin-Plaški basin, and on the south-east by the Malovan pass. Today most of the territory of Lika ( Brinje, Donji Lapac, Gospić, Lovinac, Otočac, Perušić, Plitvička Jezera, Udbina and Vrhovine) is part of Lika-Senj County. Josipdol, Plaški and Saborsko are part of Karlovac County and Gračac is part of Zadar County. Smiljan
Smiljan () is a village in the mountainous region of Western Lika in Croatia. It is located northwest of Gospić, and fifteen kilometers from the Zagreb-Split highway; its population is 418 (2011). Smiljan is the birthplace of inventor and engineer Nikola Tesla. Geography It consists of eighteen scattered hamlets (Baćinac, Bogdanić, Čovini, Debelo Brdo, Dražica, Kolakovica, Kovačevići, Ljutača, Milkovića Varoš, Miljača, Miškulin Brdo, Podkrčmar, Rasovača, Rosulje, Smiljan, Smiljansko Polje, Vaganac). Divoselo
Divoselo ( sr-cyr, Дивосело) is a village in the Gospić municipality in the Lika region of central Croatia. It is located near Gospić, connected by the D25 (Croatia), D25 highway. History During the Genocide of Serbs in the Independent State of Croatia, WWII Genocide of Serbs by the Croatian fascist Ustaše regime, more than 900 Serbs were massacred in Divoselo. The Serb community was ethnically cleansed from the area during the Operation Medak Pocket (September 1993) of the Croatian War (1991–95), when the Croatian Army took it from the break-away Republic of Serbian Krajina. Earlier, the Battle of Gospić (1991) included firefights between the Yugoslav People's Army and the Croatian National Guard in the village. Ličko Polje () is a polje (karstic field) in the Lika region, located in Croatia. Being the largest in Croatia, the field covers an area of 465 km2, and consists of five smaller fields: Lipovo, Kosinjsko, Pazariško, Brezovo and Gospićko.
