Saltney Ferry Railway Station
Saltney Ferry (Mold Junction) railway station was located on the western edge of the village of Saltney, Flintshire (now effectively a suburb of Chester). History Opened 1 June 1891 by the London and North Western Railway, it was served by what is now the North Wales Coast Line between Chester, Cheshire and Holyhead, Anglesey. The station was the most eastern one on the line to be found in Wales, being just from the English border. The single island platform was reached by steps down from the road bridge. Although technically on the North Wales Line the station was, for all practical purposes, on the Chester to Denbigh branch line as trains from the station generally only used the smaller line. Saltney
Saltney is a cross-border town, split between Flintshire, Wales and Cheshire, England. The town is intersected by the England–Wales border, with its larger part being a community of Wales in the historic county of Clwyd. The town forms part of Chester's built-up area and is around 5 miles from Deeside. Saltney is located next to the River Dee. Chester And Holyhead Railway
The Chester and Holyhead Railway was an early railway company conceived to improve transmission of Government dispatches between London and Ireland, as well as ordinary railway objectives. Its construction was hugely expensive, chiefly due to the cost of building the Britannia Tubular Bridge over the Menai Strait. The company had relied on Government support in facilitating the ferry service, and this proved to be uncertain. The company opened its main line throughout in 1850. It relied on the co-operation of other railways to reach London and in 1859 it was absorbed by the London and North Western Railway. The motive power depot (MPD) or locomotive depot, or traction maintenance depot (TMD), is the place where locomotives are usually housed, repaired and maintained when not being used. Mold Railway
The Mold Railway was a railway company that built a line in north-east Wales. The line linked Mold to Chester and it opened on 14 August 1849. The company built a mineral branch line to Ffrith, opened in November 1849. Mold itself was an important regional centre, and contained considerable mineral resources. The London and North Western Railway took over the company in 1859. As the mineral industry developed, steelmaking at Brymbo became dominant, and the LNWR arranged with the Great Western Railway to connect to that place. The passenger service closed in 1962, and in 1972 all rail activity ceased except for serving the Synthite factory just north of Mold; total closure followed in 1983. An island platform (also center platform, centre platform) is a station layout arrangement where a single platform is positioned between two tracks within a railway station, tram stop or transitway interchange. Island platforms are popular on twin-track routes due to pragmatic and cost reasons.
