SS Rotterdam (1886)
SS ''Rotterdam'' was a 19th-century ocean-going steamer. She was built in 1878 by the shipbuilding firm, Harland and Wolff, and had a gross tonnage of 3,361 tons. Originally named ''British Empire'', she was owned by the British Ship Owners Co. and operated by the American Line. Her maiden voyage began on September 25, 1878, going from Liverpool, England, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 13 days, arriving on October 7, 1878. The Liverpool-Philadelphia line was her main route until being sold in 1886 to the Nederlandsche-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij (Dutch-American Steamship Company), more commonly known as the Holland America Line. She was then renamed ''Rotterdam'', being the second HAL ship to bear that name. American Line
The American Line was a shipping company founded in 1871 and based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It began as part of the Pennsylvania Railroad, although the railroad got out of the shipping business soon after founding the company. In 1902, it became part of the International Navigation Co., with the American Line generally handling traffic between the United States ports of Philadelphia and New York City and the British ports of Liverpool and Southampton. Sister company Red Star Line handled traffic between America and the European continent, primarily through Antwerp, Belgium. Guion Line
The Liverpool and Great Western Steamship Company, known commonly as the Guion Line, was a British passenger service that operated the Liverpool-Queenstown-New York route from 1866 to 1894. While incorporated in Great Britain, 52% of the company's capital was from the American firm, Williams and Guion of New York. Known primarily for transporting immigrants, in 1879 the line started commissioning Blue Riband record breakers to compete against Cunard Line, Cunard, White Star Line, White Star and Inman Line, Inman for first class passengers. The financial troubles of one of the company's major partners in 1884 forced the firm to return its latest record breaker, the ''Oregon'', to her builders and focus again on the immigrant trade. Edam () is a town in the northwest Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. Combined with Volendam, Edam forms the municipality of Edam-Volendam. Approximately 7,380 people live in Edam.
