St. Patrick's Missionary Society
St. Patrick's Missionary Society (Latin ''Societas Sancti Patritii pro Missionibus ad Exteros''; also known as the Kiltegan Fathers) is a Catholic society of apostolic life of pontifical right for men composed of missionary priests. Its headquarters is at Kiltegan, County Wicklow in Ireland. Its members add the nominal initials SPS after their names to indicate their membership in the Society. The motto in Latin and English of the Society is and ''Christ's love compels us'', (2 Corinthians 5:14), respectively. History The Kiltegan Fathers origins stem from an appeal by Bishop Joseph (Ignatius) Shanahan of the Holy Ghost Order, in 1920 to the seminary students in Maynooth College for missionaries to Nigeria, Africa, where he was bishop; later that year Fr. Kiltegan
Kiltegan () is a village in west County Wicklow, Ireland, on the R747 regional road close to the border with County Carlow. The village is in a townland and civil parish of the same name. The civil parish extends into County Carlow. According to tradition, the village takes its Irish name, ''Cill Téagáin'' (meaning 'church of Tegan'), from a 5th century saint who was reputedly a disciple of Saint Patrick. The 19th century mansion Humewood House lies just outside the village. It was built in 1870 for William Hume-Dick, father-in-law of Richard Penruddocke Long, by William White. It remained in the Hume family until the death of Mimi Weygand (née Hume), in 1992.
