Spejbl And Hurvínek
Spejbl and Hurvínek (/s-payble & hoor-vee-neck/) is a Czech puppet comedy duo. The characters were conceived by Czech puppeteer Josef Skupa. Throughout the years the two characters have gained international success. They have released many comedy albums, had their own television show and feature film ''Harvie and the Magic Museum''. Each album usually contains one story, about the dim-witted father Josef Spejbl, and his son Hurvínek, who live with another family in the same apartment. Later on, the duo was accompanied by another family, Ms. Kateřina and her daughter Mánička. All four live with the dog Žeryk who has the ability to bark words. Though the comedy is aimed at children, there are several inside jokes that are meant for adults. The duo has their own Spejbl and Hurvínek Theatre in Prague-Dejvice. A puppet is an object, often resembling a human, animal or Legendary creature, mythical figure, that is animated or manipulated by a person called a puppeteer. The puppeteer uses movements of their hands, arms, or control devices such as rods or strings to move the body, head, limbs, and in some cases the mouth and eyes of the puppet. A puppeteer is a person who manipulates an inanimate object, called a puppet, to create the illusion that the puppet is alive. The puppet is often shaped like a human, animal, or legendary creature. The puppeteer may be visible to or hidden from the audience. A puppeteer can operate a puppet indirectly by the use of strings, rods, wires, electronics or directly by his or her own hands placed inside the puppet or holding it externally or any other part of the body- such as the legs. Josef Skupa
Josef Skupa (16 January 1892 in Strakonice – 8 January 1957 in Prague) was a Czech puppeteer. He studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, and worked as stage designer in the Plzeň City Theatre, also as designer in Skoda Engineering Works. In year 1919 and 1926, respectively, he created his most famous puppets: comical father ''Spejbl'' and his rascal son ''Hurvínek''. In 1930 he set up the first modern professional puppet theatre. In 1933 he became the president of the International Puppetry Association UNIMA. During the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, Skupa performed satiric and allegorical puppet plays on hundreds of stages all over Czechoslovakia. After 1945, he moved his theatre to Prague. He was praised as an official "national artist" during the Communist regime but he was criticised for his lack of political engagement. Spejbl and Hurvínek Theatre ( cs, Divadlo Spejbla a Hurvínka) is a puppet theatre located in Prague, Czech Republic. Founded in 1930 by puppeteer Josef Skupa, Spejbl and Hurvínek was the first professional puppet theatre established in Czechoslovakia and the present-day Czech Republic. Helena Štáchová, a puppeteer who played the well known roles of Manicka and Mrs Katerina in the company, served as the head of Spejbl and Hurvínek from 1996 until her death in 2017, following Miloš Kirschner (1956/1966-1996) and founder Josef Skupa (1930-1956). Dejvice is a historical community, a municipal quarter of the Prague 6 district of Prague, Czech Republic. Its history can be traced back to the late Roman era. Večerníček (meaning "little bedtime story" Czech and Slovak) is a television program for children in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It has been broadcast regularly for over 50 years. Before the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, two versions – one in Czech and one in Slovak – were aired in the respective parts of Czechoslovakia. Similar shows in other European countries include ''Sandmännchen'' in Germany, '' Esti mese'' in Hungary and '' Wieczorynka'' in Poland.
