Southern Copper Corporation is a mining company that was founded in 1952. The current incarnation of Southern Copper can be traced to the 2005 acquisition of Southern Peru Copper Corporation by the Mexican copper producer Minera México. 88.9 percent of Southern Copper is owned by Mexican mining conglomerate Grupo México (per proxy statement dated March 27, 2018) . Based on 2007 reserves data, Southern Copper is the world's largest publicly traded copper mining company and the world's seventh largest copper mining company based on 2007 sales. Molybdenum
Molybdenum is a chemical element with the symbol Mo and atomic number 42 which is located in period 5 and group 6. The name is from Neo-Latin ''molybdaenum'', which is based on Ancient Greek ', meaning lead, since its ores were confused with lead ores. Molybdenum minerals have been known throughout history, but the element was discovered (in the sense of differentiating it as a new entity from the mineral salts of other metals) in 1778 by Carl Wilhelm Scheele. La Caridad Mine
La Caridad Mine is a large open-pit copper mine in Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico. It is operated by Mexicana de Cobre, S.A., which is a part of Grupo Mexico, the largest copper producer in Mexico. The mine lies approximately east of Nacozari de Garcia. Although the mine was worked in the 1800s, it was closed about 1948, and did not reopen until 1979. In 1985 the mine was producing over 72,000 metric tons of ore per day. In addition to copper, it produced silver as a byproduct, in 1995 that amounted to over 77 tons of silver. The mine was repurchased by investors from the Mexican government in 1988. The mine employed approximately 3,000 workers in 2000. In 2006 the mine was shut down due to labor strikes. Cananea Mine
The Buenavista mine, historically known as the Cananea copper mine, is a large open pit copper mine located in the north-west of Mexico in Cananea, Sonora. It lies south of the international border near Nogales, Arizona. Buenavista mine represents one of the largest copper reserves in Mexico and in the world. Tia Maria Mine
The Tia Maria mine is a large copper deposit located in the south of Peru in the province of Islay, Arequipa Region. The deposit contains an estimated total reserves 711 million tonnes of ore graded at 0.36% copper. The project is operated by Southern Peru Copper Corporation. In 2011, there were protests against the project which led to the deaths of three people. Concerns about the impact on agriculture led to the project's being put on hold. A revised Environmental Impact Assessment by Geoservice Ingeniería for Southern Copper Corporation was approved in August 2014. The construction permit is still pending. A new round of protests began in March 2015, including a march of eight hundred people. Many people were injured, and, by May, three more people have died from protesting. Cuajone Mine
The Cuajone mine is a large mining, copper mine located in the south of Peru in Moquegua Region. Cuajone represents one of the largest copper reserve in Peru and in the world having estimated reserves of 1.6 billion tonnes of ore grading 0.57% copper. The mine has resulted in an environmental conflict, because local residents say that the mine pollutes the environment without providing economic benefits. In February, 2022 local residents blockaded rail access to the mine and cut its water supply, demanding $5 billion in compensation and 5% of the mine's profits.
